I am in the beginning stages of building a mid-mount grader blade for my 314-H. I'm going to make it out of a motor grader edge blade, and im trying to make my mind up if i need to make a push type or a pull type? I'm not trying to displace hard pack with it, all im going to use it for is pretty much loose dirt and gravel.

I prefer a pull type myself. Push type can some times develop a chatter to the ground leaving a jagged surface behind.

PULL

Use a PULL type.

You'd be happy with a PULL type grader.

Trina uses a pull type grader on her 867 to keep our driveway level and straight.

A push type grader can dig in more than desired very quickly on unlevel or uneven ground.

I think this is the first time she used it...

When I grade with my front blade I push it roughly where I want it but then back blade it to finish grade…

WHX??

I've got a mid mount and a rear blade I picked up from @JoeM. My go to is the mid but would be slick if I could figure out how to use them both on the same tractor with independent lifts. For now just have to get another tractor for each blade.....

You guys with the front blade can you back drag decent with them?

As long as you can control the height of the blade. Absolutely.

Yes.
Not as effective as a mid blade I am sure, but certainly adequate for my limited needs…

You can adjust the top / bottom lean so it digs more or less…

A lot of the issue with the mid mounts is that they are so light. What you need is an Allis-Chalmers mid blade. Easily adaptable to a WH They are HEAVY!!

Valid point.

Disclaimer:

Do not try this at home!!!

Trina's tractor does not have steps and she has been known to park her feet on one or both ends of the blade.

This is a common thing i see people talking about in all the post iv read on here, my plan is weld three blades together and make a thick and heavy blade. I'm shooting for 100# unit when complete

How will you hold it a certain level?

I should rephrase that a little. How do you plan to keep the blade at a certain height?

We've had the same thought.

There's been multiple occasions where Trina and I have wanted to move a little extra dirt by maybe shaving the driveway or the backyard.

Her tractor isn't very heavy and neither is she so I was thinking of producing a blade that's 40" across like her grader and putting down maybe five or seven teeth.

Run it a few passes back and forth across what we are trying to score up and then use a dozer blade or the smooth side of that grader blade to move the loose material out of the way.

Is there a round knob on your implement lift lever on the left of the tractor that controls how far that lever can drop?

I like the idea of you building a very heavy duty grader blade and I think 100 lb is a good weight.

I am thinking that you're going to want to have the ability to keep that set at a particular height so that when you're spreading loads it's not going to dig in too much too quickly...

If you're trying to REMOVE material that's fine. But if you're trying to SPREAD material that's a whole different ball game.

@ebinmaine To my knowledge there is no adjusting knob, it's a hydro

Oh ohh oh oh oh.

Well then never mind that.

Trina and I have been running manual transmission tractors for several years now and I just recently added our first Hydro to the fleet so I'm still getting used to communicating with you fluid push type drive people....

On the topic of blades .... have any of yall seen this type/kind of blade? A 5 footer, this thing is really neat, being able to 'flip' the blade for push or drag with simply pulling a lever under the arm and there is 2 settings for the angle in both positions. Just curious, having seen a lot of blades here on the forum but I have never seen this particular design. It came with a D180 I bought several years ago along with a plow (in the background) and disc, and was all bought by the PO as a package from a WH dealer.

I havent used it many years, cause I got a Mitsu with FEL. It and the plow had been sitting out so I had just finished cleaning them up to sell....
