Fuel tank shut off leak

Recommended Posts

JimSraj

Thought I was ready to turn the key on the Raider 12 with the newly rebuilt K301S installed and mostly new wiring. When I started putting gas in the tank I had the tank valve shut until I’d added about a quart or so. Then I opened the valve and a very small stream of gas started to flow into the filter then stopped. Checking the valve showed it to be leaking so I drained the tank, removed it and took the valve apart. A small piece of what looks like the remnants of a leather seal (2nd picture) was found on the stem of the valve. Anyone know if that was leather or rubber? Better yet what I can replace it with?  Exact id, od and material diameter are probably important.

When this happened on my 14-8, took the valve stem to the local hardware store and found a replacement o ring in the small parts drawers.  Basically matched the size with the old one.  That was about three years ago - still holding.

@Achto agree with you on that new fresh valve replacement , just the idea of getting rid of the problem , is a should do replacement .  always have a fresh new tank valve in my spare parts , any issues , just change it out . detail recommendation , use some dielectric grease on those related o ring to tank fitting / sealing . that grease is super lube rated , for easy installation and no rubber effects , pete

Thanks guys. I tried a couple ‘O’ rings but none would seal when the valve is open. I did order a Stens replacement (thanks Achto) but in the meanwhile, being anxious to turn the key, I packed the valve stem with plumbers valve packing. It worked! She’s running!  Found some fuel leaking from the new fuel pump so I’m not able to get her carb adjusted until I sort that out but I’m pretty pleased that my first rebuild worked out.

A BIG THANK YOU to all of you that shared advise, knowledge and encouragement along the way.
