rmaynard 15,512 #2 Posted December 19, 2021 Looks like that tranny sat out in the rain for a long time. If I'm seeing it correctly it looks like most of the shaft is rusted away. You might have to crack her open and see what's going on inside as well. If you weren't so darned far away, I have a nice 8-speed from a '92 416-8 for sale up here in MD.
RED-Z06 2,221 #3 Posted December 19, 2021 I had some knock er loose left in an old can...dribbled it on, hit it with the blow torch for about 2 minutes, more knock er loose, then vice grips on the shifter stub...kept repeating this and darned if it didnt come loose, shifts clean between Hi and Lo now...id have never believed it to be possible without snspping that stub clean off. Yeah 16 years in the weather...but get this, no water in the trans, no slurry, no milk...no rust on the dipstick. The shift boot hung in long enough to keep water out.

wallfish 17,011 #8 Posted December 19, 2021 Amazing! Well, the gear oil can seep in enough to get those hubs loose too so guessing the gear oil did it's job on the bottom of that shaft too. How do you "beef it up" now so it doesn't just snap off from the leverage of the handle? Or do you think it will last?

Itll last..i rarely use low range

Both the 854 8 speed and the C81 get used all 4 seasons - and Lo range gets used on both.....quite a bit. Bill
