Digger 66 3,478 #1 Posted December 18, 2021 (edited) The flour mill I work for may finally get to demolish their old building . Last Saturdays wind storm may have dealt the final blow to the Great Northern elevator completed in 1897 here in Buffalo NY . The 3rd pic is from the mid 50's with the structure located at the red arrow . The pic of the collapsed North wall would be viewed from the green arrows direction . Lots of history there . I swiped a couple of bricks when we were pulling the undamaged trailers out of the lot . Stormin 9,981 #3 Posted December 18, 2021 That's a shame. Those old buildings have character. Unlike the stuff that gets thrown up these days.

953 nut 55,279 #7 Posted December 19, 2021 Sad to think a missive industrial site like this won't be retained. Lake Erie and Ontario are home to a lot of industrial operations and we need to keep them going. The Erie Canal was impetus for industrial development in central and western New York. Growing up in the Syracuse aria I remember many factory sites along what was left of the Erie that were abandoned after the larger New York State Barge Canal opened. Locations like yours could ship finished goods to the rest of the world because of the Erie Canal.

I do love old industrial areas , A LOT! But... The prevailing winds are out of the West / Southwest making the East wall the next in a potential blow-out . The CSX rail spur that services General Mills travels right between Ganson St and the East wall . If it were blocked , it would be days before Gen Mills would be able to ship / receive rail . A daily trip for the rail guys . There is parking for about 25 / 30 employee autos along the same line . ADM has roughly 80 workers on 3 shifts so parking is now non-existent , It was problematic before the structure was deemed structurally unsound . My thought is : With the structure down it would pave the way for progress that is now stifled by it's footprint .
