This year’s project.

The students asked if they could restore another wheel horse . I said of course. I brought my C141 in last month and they are going to town on it. They tore it down to the frame and sand blasted a majority of the parts. Each part received a coat of epoxy primer before the paint. They are doing a fantastic job.

Sounds terrific. Must be interesting to listen to the chatter amongst the students as they work.

I like to stand back and hear them talk. They really like the transformation from dull and rusty to shiny and clean. 
I let them chose the color scheme. I give them options and they run with it. They like having a say in the project. I like their choices so far . It’s going to look sharp.

@BHunter  great opportunity to tighten up that sloppy end fit on the PTO LEVER .typically add 3/8" or more of washers and lubricant to that battery ground rail end point . also use battery ground bolt , to add a cable to corner of engine to frame , clutch pedal side to enhance frame ground . use a bolt on electrical lug , letting you easily add on more wires. pete

I’m glad to see you doing this again. Shop class and more importantly my shop teacher were the only things that kept me in school. I took every available shop class there was. I’ve been out of school for 34 years and I’m still good friends with my shop teacher! I should start a separate thread on all the stories from shop class, some about all the things I learned and some about things that happened that are down right hysterical!

I wasn't permitted to take shop in school because school policy put those classes in the same periods as the "college bound" students' math, science, and language classes.  I understood the importance of the classes I did get and would have gladly stayed after school for shop instead of sports--but that was also nixed. Thankfully my Dad and others took the time to teach me stuff!

 

I'd love to hear shop stories first hand. Some of the things my teammates shared of their experiences cracked us kids up.

Thanks for the compliment Kevin. I appreciate it. It does take a lot of patience. Especially when something gets accidentally broken or damaged. 
You’re my hero too. You are very talented and knowledgeable. My students and I are looking forward to your toy hauler build.

Thanks Don. The red they picked is nice. It is a candy apple with some aluminum flakes under the red candy. Looks amazing in the sun. 
The hood decals will be white 😜

Black Widow is the company. It’s air operated. I like it a lot. 
I also use it to load and unload tractors and other stuff into my truck bed. It’s the same height when up. 
the price really skyrocketed on it since I bought it a few years ago.

Today we put new gaskets in and painted the engine. We replaced the valves before taking the tractor apart. Made sure the adjustments were good and it ran properly first

Many moons ago I had a '66 Beetle that wouldn't pass inspection. Unibody with bad, bad rust.

Locally there is a cooperative among high schools that runs a technical school, including an auto shop. When I advertised the car for parts, they came and got it--crowing that the engine and front suspension were in such good shape (it had only about 70,000 miles). The next thing I saw of it, it had been rebuilt into a Formula Vee racer!

Kicker is that they paid me the same $300 I had originally paid for it and they'd sold off the glass and doors for $50 to a rebuilder! Those students (and their instructors) were clever and industrious.

Thanks Don. The kids are seeing the project transforming and they are getting excited to finish it . 
I like that story. With school budgets being thin, we learn to be industrious and very creative. . I bet that racer looked pretty cool.
