Jrain 276 #1 Posted December 16, 2021 Howdy all . Well after posting last week about the second WH I picked up from my scrap guy friend , I am happy to report that I had a little time today to go though this Gem Automatic 16 . went through the fuel system all looked very clean then checked and set the governor , I lubed the cables to get the choke and throttle to operate nice and smooth , I pulled the spark plug witch did not look to bad cleaned it up , then check all the wiring to see if anything was frayed or broken , at that point I decided to see if she had spark, got a battery in and turned the key , starter spun but no engagement ,I could see the bendix drive was not throwing out all the way ,so pulled the starter took the bendix drive a part and the old grease was caked up solid ,so cleaned it new grease and reinstalled the starter. turned the key had perfect starter engagement , and sure enough had really nice spark ,so I made up a make shift fuel tank and let her rip ,it was like somebody just finished cutting grass with this Gem it fired right up. I could not believe how nice this engine ran, let her warm up adjusted the low speed idle and adjusted the throttle cable both were way out of adjustment , I also confirmed the electric PTO worked , Tomorrow I will pull the cover go through the drive belt operation , I can feel there is way more play in that belt compared to my C120 , so I will get it on the jack so I can confirm the transmission operation and hydraulics hopefully work, if all goes well I will give this Gem a test drive . 5

pacer 3,174 #3 Posted December 17, 2021 Nice find and obviously way more than a parts tractor - amazing what is thrown away. Sounds like you have covered most of the preliminaries, but I'll ad a suggestion --- pull the tins and ck for chaff and rats nest!
ebinmaine 67,671 #4 Posted December 17, 2021 Excellent. Glad to hear that machine is getting better care. Just for future reference the starter Bendix should NOT have any type of wet lube such as grease or oil. They are lubed with dry graphite powder.

And I mean that most sincerely! Pretty much and for the most part, anyway. 3

LOL no engineering on my part my thought of the pencil = Graphite is that if you are a acoustic guitar player as I am, where the strings pass at the top of the guitar before they go to the tuning keys at the end of the fret board that white thing witch the strings cross is called a Nut and when putting new string on you want to use Graphite for basicly the same reason as the starter bendix , in all my years of playing not one guitar player I know has powdered graphite . we all use pencils its made from graphite well unless you have a very old lead pencil , But in the guitar world is known as lubing your nut. 1

Nice. I was just taking the piss, anyway. Oh, and by the way, nice thumper you got there. Well done! Oh, and one other thing: that’s a British expression and not meant to be untoward. I’m hoping @Mickwhittor one of the other lads across the pond will validate this for a wretch with his foot in his mouth. Mickwhitt 4,642 #13 Posted December 18, 2021 Taking the piss is a good old anglo saxon phrase meaning to make fun of or verbally belittle someone. It can also mean taking advantage of someone or something like taking more than a fair share of something like at a buffet and eating more food than anyone else. "He is only taking the piss out of you." Is an example of its usage. Or "You can borrow my car but don't take the piss" meaning don't go abusing the favour by driving it excessively or returning it damaged. Looking up the origin of the phrase surprised me a bit as it relates to...well, you look it up as I don't want to start discussing gentleman's parts on a public forum lol. Suffice it to say the use in the post above is another aspect of the phrase where someone might make a joke at your expense and soften the hurt by saying "I'm only taking the piss" ie not being serious. The English language is brilliant. Mikipedia 1

Thanks for the erudition. I’ve never understood the phrase to be considered obscene, merely slightly off color, or colour, if you prefer, and that it meant a good natured ribbing. A fair amount of it happens here on RS, whatever one calls it!
Mickwhitt 4,642 #17 Posted December 18, 2021 Its one of the explanations as to how it arose that has a little spice to it. Its not really obscene but is a little delicate for open discussion ha ha Taking the piss to us can be a light hearted leg pull or a more serious way to offend. The second possible genesis of the phrase relates to the use of urine as a ballast weight in sailing ships as it could be sold to tanners when they reached port. Its high in ammonia good for tanning leather. Sailors disliked the cargo and would deny carrying it to avoid shame so they were said to be taking the piss, ie making up a story to hide the truth. You decide, its either dusguising the fact your ship is carrying urine to sell on and being ashamed of it or the physical action of urinating removing a certain early morning gentleman's excitement thus puncturing his pride. (I think you guys refer to post sleep penile tumescence as Morning Wood? We call it being piss proud which is deflated as soon as one urinates). Complex language betwixt two great nations. 2
