Nice find and obviously way more than a parts tractor - amazing what is thrown away.

Sounds like you have covered most of the preliminaries, but I'll ad a suggestion --- pull the tins and ck for chaff and rats nest!

Excellent.

Glad to hear that machine is getting better care.

Just for future reference the starter Bendix should NOT have any type of wet lube such as grease or oil.

They are lubed with dry graphite powder.

This is exactly the kind of can-do, innovative engineering thinking that makes RS a light unto humanity.  And I mean that most sincerely!:greetings-clappingyellow:

Pretty much and for the most part, anyway.

LOL no engineering on my part  my thought of the pencil = Graphite is that if you are a acoustic guitar player as I am, where the strings pass at the top of the guitar before they go to the tuning keys at the end of the fret board that white thing witch the strings cross is  called a Nut and when putting new string on you want to use Graphite for basicly the same reason as the starter bendix , in all my years of playing not one guitar player I know has powdered graphite . we all use pencils its made from graphite well unless you have a very old lead pencil , But in the guitar world is known as lubing your nut.

Nice.  I was just taking the piss, anyway.  Oh, and by the way, nice thumper you got there.  Well done!

Oh, and one other thing:  that’s a British expression and not meant to be untoward.  I’m hoping @Mickwhittor one of the other lads across the pond will validate this for a wretch with his foot in his mouth.

Taking the piss is a good old anglo saxon phrase meaning to make fun of or verbally belittle someone. It can also mean taking advantage of someone or something like taking more than a fair share of something like at a buffet and eating more food than anyone else.

"He is only taking the piss out of you." Is an example of its usage.

Or "You can borrow my car but don't take the piss" meaning don't go abusing the favour by driving it excessively or returning it damaged.

Looking up the origin of the phrase surprised me a bit as it relates to...well, you look it up as I don't want to start discussing gentleman's parts on a public forum lol.

Suffice it to say the use in the post above is another aspect of the phrase where someone might make a joke at your expense and soften the hurt by saying "I'm only taking the piss" ie not being serious.

The English language is brilliant.

I've been looking for a C160 or 416 with a Kohler forever, and people keep finding them at bleeping scrapyards!

But seriously- congratulations on an awesome find! I hope it gives you another 40 years of service.

...and I hope I find one dangit!

It’s been said the British and Americans are two peoples separated by a common tongue.  Thanks for the erudition.  I’ve never understood the phrase to be considered obscene, merely slightly off color, or colour, if you prefer, and that it meant a good natured ribbing.  A fair amount of it happens here on RS, whatever one calls it!

Its one of the explanations as to how it arose that has a little spice to it.

Its not really obscene but is a little delicate for open discussion ha ha

Taking the piss to us can be a light hearted leg pull or a more serious way to offend.

The second possible genesis of the phrase relates to the use of urine as a ballast weight in sailing ships as it could be sold to tanners when they reached port. Its high in ammonia good for tanning leather.

Sailors disliked the cargo and would deny carrying it to avoid shame so they were said to be taking the piss, ie making up a story to hide the truth.

You decide, its either dusguising the fact your ship is carrying urine to sell on and being ashamed of it or the physical action of urinating removing a certain early morning gentleman's excitement thus puncturing his pride. (I think you guys refer to post sleep penile tumescence as Morning Wood? We call it being piss proud which is deflated as soon as one urinates).

Complex language betwixt two great nations.

Well, with this urea shortage and resultant difficulties sourcing fertlizer and all, literally taking it may become a lucrative business opportunity in these challenging economic times. 🤪
