Did your 312-8 have an engine transplant? A 312-8 should have a 12hp with an 8 speed transmission.

The 79263 fits the 260-Series tractors with vertical engine crankshaft so the drive won't work on the 300-Series

Any of these will work on the 300-Series

Front quick hitch introduced in 1973. Snowthrower rear frame has a 5/8" diameter round bar.

1973-74 model 6-6212 plus 6-9113

1974 model 6-6213 - (First model to include 8-0221 extensions without the front straight return - just a flat plate)

1975 model 6-6214 - (First model to include 8-0221 [103552 replaced by 93-1617 and 93-1617-01] side extensions with the front straight return. First model to have a cable spool on chute rotating crank) Chute crank support decal 104461.

1976 model 6-6215 ------ Chute crank support decal 104461. This one -

1976 model 66-42ST01 - Chute crank support decal 104461. and this one are likely identical. The model number format changed.

1977 model 76-42ST01 - Chute crank support decal 104461. This one

1978 model 86-42ST01 - Chute crank support decal 104461. and this one

1979 model 96-42ST01 - Chute crank support decal 104461. and this one may be all the same. They started using a different model number for each model year.

1980 model 06-42ST01 - (Last 42" model to use 4 grooved rollers for the chute)

1981-82 model 06-42ST02 - (First model to use plastic collar for the chute but was a retrofit for older models. Last model to use wheels)

1983 model 06-42ST03 - (First model to use skids)

1984-87 model 06-42ST04 - (Last model to use a 3/4" diameter driveshaft)

1987-89 model 06-42ST05 - (First model to use a 7/8" diameter driveshaft)

1990 model 06-42ST06 - (Last model to use a cable to turn the chute)

1991-93 model 06-42ST07 - (First model with tall chute retained by 3 individual grooved retainers)

1993-2001 model 79360 - (2001 and earlier will fit 2002-2007 with kit 105-1503)

2002-2007 model 79362

@BeninCT agree with @Achto on the  312-8 set up , have 3 of those , all handle the snow blower with  no issues. maintenance is a vital part of usage and lubrication  to keep it working . pete

@Achto as you are sure aware , its easy to respond to an issue , IN THE WAY THAT YOU MAINTAIN IT , that has nothing to do with the way that others NEGLECT  the same set up . continue to be amazed with obvious problems , rust , bent broken anything , and expect it to work . think just paying attention to ease of operation , is your best guide. once this stuff goes away , thats it , nothing but plastic / battery city  . pete

Ok finally got a picture of it to load.  See it has a vertical pulley for the belt.  Seems silly to ask because you are clearly and encyclopedia of info here but want to make sure because this thing is seriously mint!  @gwest_ca

@peter lena Are you saying you are running this snowblower on a 312-8?

The model you need has a longer shaft up higher through the large holes in the frame. These often go for cheap because there is not much demand for them.

The chute and auger will fit the model you need so a good way to update an older model if the price is right.

@BeninCT  , this is the type of set up , that  @gwest_ca was referring to . not familiar with yours , but the basic blower  is the same . get on the hunt for parts , should be a relatively easy swap out , pete

This also happens to be for sale but looks way worse than the other one.  Based on what you are saying this looks to be correct and then if I understand you right, I could take the guts from the nice one (auger/bearings etc) and putt it in this to make a nice one?

@peter lena @gwest_ca

Thank you guys for taking the time to coach me here.  I might go for the worse looking one for whatever I can chisel off his $200 asking price and see what it needs.

The first one is for the 200 series vertical shaft engine models.

The second one might be good, you'd need to confirm with the model number. It seems to have the correct mount for attachamatic and correct tensioner/idler pulleys. Has the short chute--preferred by some, shunned by others! This model used a wire cable wrapped around the chute and the adjusting crank arm to rotate the chute.

A lot depends on what you cannot see here--condition of the bottom edge, the auger, and the bearings. Stored outside in the weather is not a good omen.

@Handy Don agree with you on  the other blower pick up , as a parts spare its the deal , that short chute is good for my area , with a usual wet mix of snow ,  if I  lived north in a dryer snow area the tall chute is the deal , also like the chute side gearing over the cable , both need set up and lubrication detailing to function correctly. also add a round knob on chute control lever , for easy action with mittens. good opportunity , pete
