ebinmaine 67,729 #105 Posted June 3, 2022 Oh by the way... All the rows were hand hoed by the BBT. Even she got a workout doing that. The chunks of wood are mostly hemlock. They'll be to line the base below the wire fence. Makes the bottom harder to dig at and raises the height 15, 16" or so.
ebinmaine 67,729 #106 Posted June 4, 2022 Busy day today. Went for a 5+ mile hike this morning and worked in the garden this afternoon. BBT and her mom planted some various seeds. More wood cut and placed as the base. Likely the wire fence will be installed tomorrow. Possibly also plant all the baby plants they been growing and buying. 3
ebinmaine 67,729 #107 Posted June 6, 2022 THE GARDEN IS IN !!! Today the BBT, her mom, and a 🐻 me.... Spent much of the day getting everything all set up. We cut a hole in the backyard fence and put in a "gate" (screen door). Trina and her mom built the gate for the garden area. All of us got the wood base finished up, wire fence installed. The two womens folk planted all the sprouts we had and the plants they'd been picking up at stores. I added the orange tapes which will function as a visual deturent for the 🦌 deer. We'll also be adding sliced mylar for the same reason. Here's a video update/description: Here's a Bear 🐻 moving wood. @Lee1977 and @squonk here's to you. 😂😂.
SylvanLakeWH 25,609 #108 Posted June 6, 2022 In “deerish” that fence reads: “Eb’s and BBT’s Eats - Good Food and Better Times”… Looks great! Hope it has good yields!!! 1 1

We're hoping it'll keep them out for the most part. We have a fair amount of them around here but they're all so very well fed in the wild and even the neighbors with no fencing at all don't have very many problems. I'm probably also going to hang mylar strips from some slightly taller sticks. Another thing I was reading about just yesterday is to put a twist in the mylar because it has a very particular buzzing and rattling sound in the wind that most wild animals are not at all fond of. It'll be a learning process for sure. Like Trina says, it'll either work or it won't. 😀
Darb1964 1,044 #110 Posted June 6, 2022 Irish spring soap keeps the deer out, just slice it up and put around the edge. Crushed up egg shells help keep the slugs out, other soft skinned bugs also. Like razor blades to them, good for the soil also. Good luck, looking fantastic. 1

We'll pick up some Irish spring. Plenty of eggs around here. We don't get too awful concerned about bugs and slugs because Trina checks the garden once or twice every day and so does her mom. Always good to have that extra help though.

ebinmaine 67,729 #116 Posted November 16, 2022 Well we had some great success and learned a lot this year. The fence worked great but we really don't need much more than a visual reminder to keep deerseses out. We kept 2 solar lights out there. Charge during daylight and motion sensor dusk to dawn or battery run-out. BBT was watering as we figured we needed for a good month or so. She was noticing a low growth amount and discoloration. We did some research and found that we had too much water. Turns out that one of the streams goes right near the garden so the soil is quite wet all the time. Ain't no hosin' needed. We got some tomatoes. Piles of beans both pole and bush. Other plants didn't do amazing but we learned about them. Earlier this year Trina had cut up a 'tater that showed growth right out of the grocery store bag and planted it. She grew a few tiny little potatoes! Carrots we knew the soil was too hard but left them to go about their business. Also got a good assortment. Small but deeeeelicious. Next year... More crops. More learning.
Snoopy11 5,714 #117 Posted November 16, 2022 We love to grow crookneck squash. Nothing like squash casserole! We grow other types of squash and zucchini as well... which I grill (the only way that my family likes zucchini is if I grill it... ) We grow potatoes in standing garden boxes... Tomatoes seem to grow better in pots for some reason... We grow cucumbers and pickles, which the female lady women are kind enough to can and provide for me to eat (1 jar of pickles per sitting, they are THAT good). We try to grow peppers and such... never have much luck. The most thing we grow though... is weeds. Don
Snoopy11 5,714 #118 Posted November 16, 2022 Oh, and I am sitting here eating a homemade apple fritter made with apples from our orchard... courtesy of the female lady women... (I call it an orchard... it is really about 9 trees... t'was 12 before the cherry trees died for whatever reason...) Don
