RED-Z06 2,221 #1 Posted December 13, 2021 (edited) I use alot of gas, and i keep alot on hand from April thru October because...well, Florida. Ive had just about every can made from Jerry Cans to Pumpers, to 40g gas caddys and..all have good points and bad. The caddy is nice but its heavy and you have to put it on a trailer to fill it..and its no fun on soft ground. Modern cans have too many nanny features that leak and break. But there is another option and it costs less than most others. VP Racing sells "pit cans" that hold about 5.5 gals full, big opening with a big screw off cap, and a big screw off vent...yes a real vent. I picked up 8 of these off Amazon for $185.00 plus 15 for the flex nozzle. When i empty one i just unscrew the cap and swap it to a full one. I can empty 5.5g in right at 60seconds, no spills, no holding a button under 263lbs of spring pressure. They also store well being taller. Plus the tag...its a sign (edit...tag is blurry, it says "Red Square" Edited December 13, 2021 by RED-Z06 1
ebinmaine 67,646 #2 Posted December 13, 2021 I've been using the type of cans that have the green push button on the top for several years now. I'm not overly fond of them because they don't have a vent but I do appreciate the convenience of being able to hold it above or set it onto a gas tank and just squeeze the button until it's full. I have tried to order the ad on vent kit available on multiple sites but I found that the plastic of the cans that I have is too thick to allow the vent kit to be fastened properly. Just as a point of interest, to the best of my knowledge it's against Federal regulation for anyone to carry more than 30.00 gallons of gasoline without having a properly placarded and permitted hazmat vehicle and license. Not the kind of thing most folks would worry about too much unless a sharp lawyer got involved after a collision... But just so you know.

Last i read it was 440lbs, little over 70gallons, most ive ever taken was 62 gallons spring of this year, wanted to get it before the price jumped...well worth it. pacer 3,173 #4 Posted December 13, 2021 I'm still using the older typical plastic ones but with still fairly decent spouts but no vent, which I corrected with the tubeless tire valve stem trick, and that works really OK but lifting 5 gal up to get the spout into the tank.....OOOF! So my son points out this gadget on the bay and I order one up.... By golly, best $10 I've spent in a while! Couple batteries and away it goes. I keep 4 5gal cans for non ethanol and 1 5 gal for diesel.
Sparky-(Admin) 21,338 #5 Posted December 13, 2021 Green and White VP Racing gas containers, the green ones have the same decal as the white one. I’m new to this style and haven’t actually “poured” one out yet. 2

I was hoping you'd get in on this... @RED-Z06 I've been poking around online trying to find the current regulations about gasoline hauling. Maybe it was here in Maine I heard 30 gallons?? Looks like some states may possibly regulate you to a maximum container gallon size of 5. With a maximum total size of 20 or 30 gallons.

It worked really well, my only complaint was storing it, keeping stuff out the pickup and hose, i guess it was stored too near the shop door and the sun got to the corrugated hose, it got crispy. If they made a stand where it sat with the pickup head covered and something to slip the hose end onto it would be completely practical
8ntruck 7,018 #8 Posted December 13, 2021 (edited) What do the maximum allowable hauling amounts mean to the folks who have aftermarket auxiliary fuel tanks in the bed of their pickups? Edited December 13, 2021 by 8ntruck
SylvanLakeWH 25,602 #9 Posted December 13, 2021 Just threw out 4 plastic gas cans that leaked at nozzle, split on seams etc… just junk… vent sucks on most… I’ve drilled holes in all mine and use a screw to “seal” it… pop off screw and go… works like a charm… Gonna check out the vp type… thanks for posting!

According to what I've read in the past those are almost all diesel tanks. Many manufacturers don't rate the pumps for gasoline.

I drove a 10 penny nail in a stud and hang mine on it, had it couple yrs now and still going.
lynnmor 7,308 #12 Posted December 14, 2021 I have a diesel tractor with the fuel cap on the hood. It is virtually impossible to do a clean fill with a typical fuel can, so I bought a Terrapump: I still lose a few drops when I pull the pump out of the can, but I can control where that happens. This thing shuts off automatically when full so I don't have to peer down the hole while filling. Hopefully it will last for a while, it is rather cheaply built. If all goes well I'll get one for gasoline.

I went to one of these units in February for pumping oil out of engines where the drain is not accessible, or for pumping out gas tanks full of old gas or water. Ive run it hard, probably run it well over 12 hours total and its still going no problems, i like that i can put the straw down into something. 20 bucks...dont know how they can sell it so cheap

Same deal as my Kubota. I set the can on the floor pan to get it higher, the less height it has to pump, the faster it fills.

It might siphon, I don't know, but you would need to get the can higher than the tank defeating the purpose.

Yeah but if you need gas and batteries arent readily available, and theres no funnel or spout, its worth looking into.
rjg854 11,387 #21 Posted December 14, 2021 @lynnmor that's the one I have. I just replaced the older one like it. Probably lasted 4 years. Very easy to use, no mess, no fuss. @$60 on the bay. Maybe change batteries once a year. So much better than trying to pour into the tank from a 5 gallon can. Worth the price.
