stegs 325 #1 Posted December 13, 2021 My c-141 gear drive starting acting funny Everything works fine, but it now starts creeping in neutral (which its never done before) Its is "out of gear" but still wants to creep a little, even at idle Its seems to go away once the tractor warms up and is driven, but when its cold it likes to wander slowly Any ideas where to begin to look? is something out of adjustment or needs attention I need your expert help in what too look for or adjust! stevasaurus 22,860 #4 Posted December 13, 2021 I think Pete is correct. Got to be stiff and maybe dirty oil. That would explain what it is doing when it is cold, and why it stops when it warms up. Time for a change and new 90wt. Make sure oil is warmed up when you go to drain. This is one time I would recommend a flush with 2 qts of diesel. 3 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
peter lena 8,720 #5 Posted December 13, 2021 @ steveasaurus, agree with the diesel flush , found that actual road time is best to really get things moving , and increase flushing . have 3 cul de sacs , close by so i just wait till everyone has gone to work , have it all to my self , also bring a small tool kit and carb cleaner , use every gear , hi / lo range , since doing this my trans oils have been very good . mystery oil , pete Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

stegs 325 #8 Posted December 15, 2021 (edited) Appreciate the info guys! Ill look into getting that changed this weekend. Any idea on how much gear oil i will need? Also is there a gasket i will need to replace or just a drain/refill ? I also should do this on my 417-a wheel horse. Any recommendations on filter and oil to use in that tractor? Im going to assume the gear drive uses a different oil than the 417-a hydro system How much oil (and what kind) should i use on that tractor? EDIT : just ordered a new filter for it, will be here tomorrow. stegs 325 #11 Posted December 16, 2021 Update, the 417a had its hydro system drained and refilled this summer before i bought the tractor back. SO that one is all set Now the c-141 gear drive. I took a look at the oil last night, and lets just say it looked terrible. That will be my saturday project . So here is my plan Drive the tractor around for a while to get the oil warm. Raise front of the tractor up and drain the oil out. Put tractor back on the ground, add diesel fuel (2 quarts) to trans and run it around for a while. Lift tractor back up and drain the diesel fuel out Refill with gear oil. My question is this. I found 2.5 quarts of valvoline synthetic 75w90 gear oil with limited slip additive in my cabinet? peter lena 8,720 #13 Posted December 16, 2021 @stegs my experience says get the cheapest 80-90 walmart gear gear oil , as your first refill after drainage , expect that to help clean up and flush out the rest of the crud , have any place to put some " road time on that oil " ? the more time it waterfall flushes that trans the better . then refill with that synthetic gear oil , don't waste it , that should be your last fresh oil for a while . I found that too last night looking I could flush with diesel, drain it, fill with 140 and drive it for a while....yes i live by 80 acres of blueberry plants so i can drive for a long time....and then drain that and fill with the synthetic Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
peter lena 8,720 #15 Posted December 16, 2021 @stegs, great drive / time place to go , make sure you use every gear and hi / lo ranges , on average my cleanups took 2 flushes , replace shift boot , you can also refill it thru the shifter boot area , since doing that years ago , no problems . regularly check it for any issue , keep it fresh , simple easy , good holiday pete Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
stegs 325 #16 Posted December 20, 2021 Got this taken care off over the weekend drove the tractor around before draining. Lifted up the tractor and and got the old stuff out. It came out the color of honey with shiney sparkles inside LOL It was bad fluid that was causing my issue for sure I filled with 2 quarts diesel and drove it for about 30 min drained that and it came out surprising "clean" Added my valvoline 75w90 gear oil full synthetic and Im pleased to report the creep is gone, The trans seems to shift into gear smooth, little quieter and i dare say i picked up a little speed in high range Glad it was a simple fix.! 1 1 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
