41chevy 74 #1 Posted December 12, 2021 The B 80 I’m restoring has a drilled 3/8” hole in the middle of the hood I want to get rid of it. I was thinking about brazing it with as little heat as possible and hoping not to warp the metal. Any suggestions doing something different would be appreciated. Also I went to Tractor Supply yesterday to look at red paint, couldn’t decide which would be (better) Majic red 8-2972 or Rustoleum regal red, I’m not concerned so much about the color, but the better look and durability of the two. They’re only roughly 10 dollars difference. I did grab a can of hardner and reducer, the only two left on the self. Thanks
stevasaurus 22,739 #2 Posted December 12, 2021 Three ways you could do this with no heat. 1. Epoxy a small piece of sheet metal to the under side covering the hole. You can then fill with Bondo and sand. 2. Apply a small piece of fiber glass mat to the underside covering the hole. When dry, you can fill the hole with either fiber glass or Bondo and sand. 3. Tape clear tape on backside of hole and fill with Epoxy. Sand when dry...remove tape. Make sure area around hole is clean of paint, dirt and grease.
Racinbob 11,081 #3 Posted December 12, 2021 I do pretty much what Steve said. I use JB Weld to hold a small piece of sheet metal under the hood. Then bondo, sand, prime and paint. I like the idea of the support under the hole. This Suburban 400 hood had several holes in it.
Lee1977 6,659 #4 Posted December 12, 2021 (edited) If you only have those two choices I would go with the Rustoleum Regal Red. The Tractor Supply here has Rustoleum Tractor Paint I have used some Ford Blue and bought a quart of IH Red haven't opened it. I haven't heard of anybody that liked the Majic paint. . Pullstart 62,870 #5 Posted December 12, 2021 Aluminum plate underneath the steel, or copper/ brass plate. Clamp it tight to the hood, then weld it spot, spot, spot, letting it cool in between. Before grinding it smooth, peen the welds down to relieve it from shrinkage. Grind it slow, skim it with bondo if needed. 1
Pullstart 62,870 #6 Posted December 12, 2021 It’s a long read, but if you start here you can see a lot of sheet metal work on this one… https://www.wheelhorseforum.com/topic/77467-mrs-pullstart/?page=22&tab=comments#comment-786696
41chevy 74 #7 Posted December 12, 2021 Thanks guys, very good suggestions, especially Pullstart. I guess I had a senior moment, I completely forgot my mig machine I very seldom use it. 2
stevasaurus 22,739 #8 Posted December 12, 2021 Thought you did not want to use heat?? I would have told you a piece of copper behind the hole and spot welding...the copper will not stick and the hole is filled...grind smooth. 1

kpinnc 12,028 #12 Posted December 15, 2021 (edited) Majic paint sucks. Literal garbage in a can. Forrest Gump would call it a box of chocolates. You never know what you're gonna get... Rust-Oleum paint has good coverage, consistent colors, and dries in a few hours. Use with hardener and it approaches automotive quality. And... It resists rust! I painted a hood years back when TSC stopped carrying Valspar. Two cans of the same color came out two different colors. Not even close! The hood was still sticky a week later. Really bad experience!
