Floyd Pink 44 #1 Posted December 11, 2021 I just took the drive belt off 1968 Raider12. It's got a Gates B-78. Could this be the problem with shifting? From what I understand it is supposed to have a Gates B-82. The idler / tensioner pulley with the B-78 only moves a little. Should it use the B-82?
gwest_ca-(File Mod) 11,092 #2 Posted December 11, 2021 Yes it could be the problem. Should be transmission drive belt 78-7100 replaced by 7473 - HB x 81.9" or 5/8" x 81.9 The Gates replacement is 6982 or Napa 5L820W and green in color. A B-78 is 81" long if an industrial belt. A B-82 is 85" long if an industrial belt.
daveoman1966 3,760 #3 Posted December 11, 2021 The OEM belt is # 7473. IMHO.. the after-market belts are not geometrically identical to OEM. They will either ride higher or lower in the 'V' ...especially with really old tractors...like 1968.
squonk 41,314 #4 Posted December 11, 2021 Gates 5L and Napa green belts are fine.

squonk 41,314 #6 Posted December 12, 2021 Belt should be a 5L820W. Check to make sure the belt you got has the correct number on it. Sometimes belts get returned in the wrong sheave. Also pictures would help. Maybe some one has been in there before you and changed pulleys.

Now that I have tried the NAPA green belt (too long), should I take it back and get a belt 1" shorter? I am beginning to think that I might have inherited an oddball tractor. Everything says 81.9"............ The belt is marked right. The pulleys are all original. Everything is working right. The clutch pedal travel is back to normal. But when I put the belt on you could tell immediately it was too long. I am going to keep it for now and going to town for a belt 1 " shorter. Trial and error. One thing that may be considered, when I tighten the brake adjustment nut, I have no threads left to tighten the brake drum. Should there be any adjustment left on this? Or is it OK. The brakes are working as instructed in the manual. Sorry for being a pain.
squonk 41,314 #8 Posted December 12, 2021 (edited) I would really like to see pictures of what you have going on. I would get the belt working and worry about the brake later. Did you check the roll pin on the arm that the pedal rod hooks too? Edited December 12, 2021 by squonk

I was called away. I tried everything to get the belt to work. I even polished the pulleys and tac welded a tab on the inside of the cover . Not enough it seems. An old post kept coming back to me about steel wool and mineral spirits. Even though I polished the pullies I got steel wool and charcoal starter and did a quick polish. Even cleaned the belt. Reinstalled everything. Presto, instantly the belt slipped perfectly. Elation. I got so good at removing the cover and putting it on I could have been on a Wheel Horse pit crew. Thanks again for the great help and patience with rookies. 2
