WheelhorseBob 1,549 #27 Posted December 22, 2021 As part of my C 161 restoration from this year I went through this very dilemma. My gears were in great shape and in my 1980 vintage 16 the needles were caged. After much research I left them out of my complete rebuild. BUT I have a shaker plate with rubber mounts. IMHO, if the machine is to have solid mounts, it would be wise to think about other ways to reduce vibration. Crank balancing with machined metal plates seems to be the best option. (https://www.kirkengines.com/downloads/BalancePlateInstructions.pdf) I have two 161’s. One with gears and now one without. The difference on my 16’s is very noticeable and I wouldn’t want the one without the gears solid mounted unless other mods were done. I do not think it would be enjoyable at all to run. Btw, my opinions only pertain to my K341’s. The smaller bore of smaller k series may require less balance due to less weight of the reciprocating parts.
