Battery / cranking AMP ?

Recommended Posts

So I just saved my second WH from the scrap pile, so again no history from a PO , its a 1973 auto 16 , looks pretty solid  and unmolested , after taking a good look at this tractor  I found something I did not like. this is what noticed ,air cleaner was off , fuel tank was off (that is Missing )  The battery cables had automotive  top post terminals not your standard  small engine battery Leads , My guess would be someone tried to get this 16 Auto running and used a car battery to do so , So my question to the experts is if this was done what Havoc did it do to the charging system and starting system .

The size and terminal type wouldn't cause any issues.  Older WH came with full size batteries and clamp on terminals....

Excessively ling cranking can cause issues with the starter motor

I've seen a few of those older ones with those top post cables. I don't know if they were OE WH or not.

I do actually have several automotive group 51 batteries and those are top posts and they will fit along with a group 22NF.

Properly operating starting and charging system will only draw what it needs so putting a bigger battery in doesn't hurt anything.

24 NF.

A group 22NFD is a garden tractor battery that has top post like a automotive battery. This is the stock size battery for my Raider 12. They are a little more spendy than the U1 G.T. batteries

Top post, side post, bolt on ears, wing nuts, the type of connection for the battery means nothing. As long as it is a 12v battery.

Ok thank you for the quick  response , just thought that when you use a battery rated for let say 600 plus cranking amps on a 400 cranking amp designed system there might be a issue , I know on a motorcycle they say if you let say jump start it with a car battery you can burn the stator out

You're okay as far as that goes. While you're messing around with that thing remove the battery cables from their connections, clean them a bit and reinstall.

Should have no effect on it, you can have (2) 12v batteries wired up for 1200cca at 12v and it will only flow as much amperage as is drawn by the starter, the charging system only sees 12v...it doesn't care how many amps is there its only going to hit its regulated limit. I had a 78dts truck battery rated at 750cca in my old 18hp deere...worked great
