C160 42" side discharge spindle replacement

Recommended Posts

Johnny G

Ok I must be doing something wrong. I can not remove the pully from the spindle to get to the bolts where the bearings needs replaced.  I've wd-40 for two days, I took a hammed drill and stuck a bit in backwards to see if would vibrate it loose and the big rubber mallet didn't phase it. So what's the catch??  Thanks for any advice, John

2 types of pulleys... (1)has a 'rib' on it ..(#106072) for a special tool to remove it...(2)the other type does not (#109967).

If #1, use a power steering pump pulley remover available to rent free at AutoZone.

If #2 w/o the rib...(1) remove top grease zerk and back of nut flush to top of shaft. (2) set spindle housing the the hollow of a cement block underneath...a cofffee can MAY work. (3)Set the flat of a non-steel ball-peen hammer onto top of shaft (4) with a bigger (non-steel) hammer, WHACK the ball peen (like you have a pair) (5) This should break the pulley free, then remove top nut.

ps...don't be bashful about  WHACKING that ball peen.

@Johnny G  , when attempting to remove any pulley , you must use equal leverage , at the underside of the pulley , up tight against the pulley center hub. get 2 of these flat pry bars ,https://www.harborfreight.com/15-1-2-half-inch-flat-pry-bar-2529.html? put the , 90 degree end , under the pulley on top of the spindle bolts for equal leverage , penetrating oil . push pry bars equally off to the side , pulley pops off no bent pulley or damage . done this a number of times , always works , pete

Be VERY VERY Careful when striking one hammer with another! (Really a big NoNo). Always wear eye protection, preferably a full face screen. Or hit the one hammer with a copper mallet. Hitting two hammers (made from hardened steel), together can cause pieces of “Shrapnel” to break off and fly in all directions, you could easily lose an eye 👁. Take Care!

Doug.

Yep i did about the same thing and the thing splintered and a peace went into my arm and 4,000.00 later I got it out. I still have not used the part I was working on. 250.00 for item 250.00 for shipping  plus 4,000.00  not used it and part still not fixed been about 10 years--i guess i didn't need it too bad. this was cash I did not have insh.

Of course, for all safety in mind, use brass hammers....or copper. Gloves, goggles, face shield, whatever you consider to protect yourself.

I was using a cold rolled punch--It ran short and I grab for a longer one and got not a cold rolled punch and it blew up.---- and that was the way it was.

I always have my *squints* on me.  Great for welding too.
