Patina

WHX??

Came across this article on patinas on classic cars & thought this really applies to our :wh:.

I guess I didn't know it also applied to classic cars and is "all the rage" !

Bottom line is yah his car he can do what he wants.

What's your opinion on the car - paint or leave?

My vote is leave.

I don't know Bob ...one could argue rust is PART of the patina???

You could certainly take that to different levels like many other things. I agree with Bob. I don't generally see rust as being part of the patina. Rust is something that to me, needs to be fixed.

That's not saying I would repaint that whole car though.

I'd be more prone to removing the rust as much as I could and then maybe putting a clear coat over the top of that after I rubbed out the paint as much as possible to restore it.

A auctioneer once asked me if I knew the difference between patina and dirt, his answer was "about a hundred bucks."

Truthfully patina can actually be protective and really only occurs on non-Ferrous metals.

Patina (/pəˈtnə/or /ˈpætɪnə/) is a thin layer that variously forms on the surface of copper, brass, bronze and similar metals (tarnish produced by oxidation or other chemical processes)

On ferrous metals it has become common to call it patina, but it is actually just rust.

On metal, patina is a coating of various chemical compounds such as oxides, carbonates, sulfides, or sulfates formed on the surface during exposure to atmospheric elements (oxygen, rain, acid rain, carbon dioxide, sulfur-bearing compounds).[2] In common parlance, weathering rust on steel is often mistakenly[3] referred to as patina.

I'm with Jim. That car should have been left the way it was.

When it comes down to restore or leave. May sound weird, but the item has to speak to me in order for me to make the decision. Some times history needs to live on, sometimes it needs a new beginning.

As for the car in the video, I'll just say that I don't care for the purple.

That Pontiac was a peach just the way it was.  Now it’s a rotten plum.

A swing and a miss, I say. All that time consuming prep work spent for less than acceptable results.

I got a bottle of Grape Crush chillin in the Norge as we speak. It will be opened when the Vicklings are eliminated from Super Bowl contention. 707109581avatar.gif.76449b7e36d5b41ba8e7c51b85ab46f4.gif belt.jpg.f0af20815296067ffcd7ac21e2df3578.jpg good.gif.73b89a385b750e55d99aa1fad1686d7c.gif

My 44 year old motorcycle was developing some patina, did I ruin it by removing the stuff?  :confusion-confused:

I don't think so Lynn but might be another 44 years to turn it into a classic for me.

If it’s yours, do what you want with it… If it’s not, and someone is that concerned about it, they can offer an appropriately inflated price to “save” it…

It's a Maaco job.  One good rain and it will look like the first pic again.
