WHX?? 48,828 #1 Posted December 3, 2021 (edited) Came across this article on patinas on classic cars & thought this really applies to our . I guess I didn't know it also applied to classic cars and is "all the rage" ! Bottom line is yah his car he can do what he wants. What's your opinion on the car - paint or leave? My vote is leave. https://www.motorious.com/articles/news/pontiac-chieftain-maaco-paint/ Edited December 3, 2021 by WHX?? 1
rmaynard 15,510 #2 Posted December 3, 2021 Hmm. Rust is not patina.
WHX?? 48,828 #3 Posted December 3, 2021 I don't know Bob ...one could argue rust is PART of the patina???
ebinmaine 67,593 #4 Posted December 3, 2021 You could certainly take that to different levels like many other things. I agree with Bob. I don't generally see rust as being part of the patina. Rust is something that to me, needs to be fixed. That's not saying I would repaint that whole car though. I'd be more prone to removing the rust as much as I could and then maybe putting a clear coat over the top of that after I rubbed out the paint as much as possible to restore it. lynnmor 7,307 #5 Posted December 3, 2021 A auctioneer once asked me if I knew the difference between patina and dirt, his answer was "about a hundred bucks." 1
Achto 27,601 #6 Posted December 3, 2021 (edited) Truthfully patina can actually be protective and really only occurs on non-Ferrous metals. Patina (/pəˈtiːnə/or /ˈpætɪnə/) is a thin layer that variously forms on the surface of copper, brass, bronze and similar metals (tarnish produced by oxidation or other chemical processes) On ferrous metals it has become common to call it patina, but it is actually just rust. On metal, patina is a coating of various chemical compounds such as oxides, carbonates, sulfides, or sulfates formed on the surface during exposure to atmospheric elements (oxygen, rain, acid rain, carbon dioxide, sulfur-bearing compounds).[2] In common parlance, weathering rust on steel is often mistakenly[3] referred to as patina. squonk 41,150 #8 Posted December 3, 2021 I'm with Jim. That car should have been left the way it was.
Achto 27,601 #9 Posted December 3, 2021 When it comes down to restore or leave. May sound weird, but the item has to speak to me in order for me to make the decision. Some times history needs to live on, sometimes it needs a new beginning. As for the car in the video, I'll just say that I don't care for the purple. 2
WHX?? 48,828 #10 Posted December 3, 2021 Your post says nothing about organics.... moss, lichens or fungi Dan..... Is that not patina?

lynnmor 7,307 #19 Posted December 4, 2021 My 44 year old motorcycle was developing some patina, did I ruin it by removing the stuff?
WHX?? 48,828 #20 Posted December 4, 2021 I don't think so Lynn but might be another 44 years to turn it into a classic for me. 10 hours ago, squonk said: That "Chief" has one of those light up hood ornaments. SylvanLakeWH 25,598 #21 Posted December 4, 2021 If it’s yours, do what you want with it… If it’s not, and someone is that concerned about it, they can offer an appropriately inflated price to “save” it…
