I'll have to look in my box of parts or whatever and see if I can find one of those plastic ones..

kpinnc 12,088 #61 Posted November 30, 2021 I like the inserts, but they wear too. Magnums have holes to add a spring in the governor arm and carb (look close at the pic), so maybe drill the same? Pic of mine: 1

kpinnc 12,088 #65 Posted December 1, 2021 (edited) I made a little 1/16 hole in the governor arm and added this spring. It's not strong at all, but should be enough to take up the slop. I've done this before on a hunting governor and it took care of it. Hopefully it will add some sensitivity beyond the adjustment from the manual. Prior to adding the spring, there was about 1/8 play between the arm and throttle tab. Probably isn't actually that much, but all the combined slop certainly looked like it. At least now if the governor arm just adds pressure, the throttle will immediately respond. That's my theory anyway... That's my theory anyway... Briggs used a tiny spring between the carb and governor arm on many of their engines. I've also seen it on some Hondas and other brands as well. It takes the slop out of the linkage. I wonder why Kohler never did that from the factory? As for the tick, try setting your timing with a timing light and see if it goes away. Camshaft end play has also been cited by some as a potential source for unexplained sounds. Good luck with it. Edited December 1, 2021 by Bill D 2

It is legitimately possible that Kohler may have been building engines to fit the specs of multiple buyers and that happened to be one that somebody else was using but not a Horse.

I'd be willing to wager that you are correct. There were hundreds of different specs on these engines for even the same hp model. JD and Cubs come to mind, and the blocks weren't even the same on those.
kpinnc 12,088 #70 Posted December 3, 2021 (edited) Last pics for this one. I hoped to find a clump of carbon or something binding a valve, but nothing. Seats are good, valves have full travel. So I cleaned the carbon, put on a new gasket, and shut her back up. If it blows up due to the tick, we'll rebuild it next year. Balance gears can no longer contribute to the equation, so that is that. Before and after on the noggin below. Didn't mean to scratch the piston face up so much... The oily residue on top of the piston was leftover winterizing from my FIL. Edited December 3, 2021 by kpinnc
