I's say it's an all day job. You could probable do it in less, but by the time you pull the motor, give it and the engine bay a good cleaning, fuss with some wires, etc......Then you decide to paint the engine and tins and it becomes a week job

While you have it off and the bottom open is a great time to take some solvent and wash out the inside of the block since they don't have a filter.  You could also use a can of Brake Clean to clean it out.

If you do this be sure to squirt some clean oil on thing before you reassemble it.

Trust me, this is like a southern Baptist sermon: preacher tells the truth and it hurts! :P

The procedure itself is relatively quick. Much faster had I busted the gear off or just drove the pin out to start instead of trying to get that imbedded snap ring off...

But you ALWAYS find something that needs done "while you have the engine opened up", and that burns time.

Plan on a full day, as has been said.

And to go back to the beginning of this debacle:

I had some heartburn about leaving them in, since I had to drill and tap the pan for use on a WH frame anyway. But I chickened out when I could not get that top snap ring off first.

Then after getting her running right, there was a faint 1 per rev tick that adjusting valves didn't fix. Otherwise this engine purrs and starts like it wants to run. Seriously, first revolution fire and run! Then tick, tick, tick. Kept me up at night...

So I dove back in and am SO glad I did!

I know it's probably printed out somewhere and I could easily find it if I tried... but...  how much does the K301 weigh in at?  I'd like to be prepared for the weight.  I plan to remove the balance gears once I get done with all the other stuff I'm doing to it.

Gotta be close.

My K341 weighs about 125 or 128 lbs.

That K321 was the heaviest 125 lbs I've ever moved around...

I used a heavy strap around the flywheel and PTO shaft, and stabilized with the exhaust.

Sounds cool but it freaking sucked!

I'm gonna limp and waddle for the next 2-3 days...

Of all the stuff I've built, I don't know why on earth I've never built some kind of engine lifter.

As someone who has had back surgery and probably will need another,

SAVE YOUR BACK!!!!

I was taught many years ago, there are so many lifts in your back. Proving how strong / macho/ whatever you are lifting heavy bulky stuff is just foolish. It's not just how much does something weigh, it's also how is that weight distributed. What is there to actually grab onto? I use my lift table and chain hoist even on the K181's I've been working on. You may be able to toss that big block on the bench now, but you'll pay for it in the late years.

We have a 100+ LB German Shepherd... whom still wants to be picked up and held.

She feels light to me... 'specially compared to some of the logs I have moved by hand this year...

Well, I can rest easier now that the balance gears are out. Engine is installed and running again.

But the "tick" is still there. I adjusted the valves to the range in the manual, and if anything the tick is now more obvious. May be little more than several noisy items have been addressed on the tractor, so it may just be easier to hear now. It is definitely top end noise.

This engine is gonna drive me to drinking...

Would you be able to take a video and capture the sound? I know it is hard... but if I can hear it, I might be able to lead you in one direction or another.

It kinda sounds like a valve spring.

What weight oil are you using? Does it tick when cold/warm, or all the time?

I probably spent too many hours being stupid and lifting heavy stuff, as Mike @squonk said, you have only so many lifts in your back, and then this! Medicare paid for the hardware but I pay every day for my foolish past misdeeds.

Exactly what I'm thinking too. I had hoped that properly adjusting the valves would stop it, but I think it's worse now. They weren't terribly out of adjustment anyway, but were both a bit loose.

I'm probably being too picky. But my Magnum 10 and K321 on the Bronco run much smoother, though the Bronco 14 is significantly louder than the 310-8.

What really bugs me is that this engine has governor issues that I can't iron out. I think it's mostly due to slop across all the linkages though, because it is pretty loose. Prolly gonna add a spring across the throttle link to governor to start and see where it goes from there.

Please keep us posted on the fixes and results.

My new-to-me 75 Automatic governor linkage is also a tad loose.

Been wondering how I could tighten that up.

That is a wake up call for me, I need to find a different way lifting those WH engines. Kohlers and now that Lombardini of 187lbs.

Please consider ear protection as well. Ear damage is also cumulative...
