ebinmaine 68,283 #2 Posted November 28, 2021 @admin could merge the two. My reply from the other thread: I'm half inclined to think if you had a really strong magnet and a lever (screwdriver?) You could get that broken piece out... @stevasaurus ? 2

953 nut 55,756 #4 Posted November 28, 2021 Is there enough of the stub to grab with a pair of needle nose vise grips? 1
wallfish 17,079 #5 Posted November 28, 2021 Pinch it with the pliers and remove the set screw in the front and pull it out. 1
gwest_ca-(File Mod) 11,094 #6 Posted November 28, 2021 Probably help if you knew what the rest of it looks like. There is a ball machined into the end of it.
Handy Don 12,451 #7 Posted November 28, 2021 Being a complete newb on transmission internals, I'll ask the dumb question: If the ball (or the ball and more) broke off and isn't there to be removed, where is it likely to be and what care must be taken to make sure it doesn't cause any more damage?

ALL gaskets, bearings and seals are available from Lowell at Wheelhorse Parts and More. Other things are readily available used.
Maxwell-8 4,290 #9 Posted November 28, 2021 These trannys are easy to fix and are well worth fixing. I have done couple with all great succes! Try and fish it out first. If that doesn't work, remove and open the transmission
stevasaurus 22,857 #10 Posted November 28, 2021 Like Wallfish said, remove the set screw. Then take a long, skinny screwdriver and try to pry the shift fork toward where the broken piece is...this should also put you into neutral. That will create enough slack that the piece will either slip in or make it so you can grab it a pull it out. If it slips in, a pencil magnet should be able to grab it. A - Z Tractors should have a used shifter that you can buy. Here is a thread with videos that will show you what it is like inside.
oliver2-44 9,848 #12 Posted November 28, 2021 If it was me, I'd try to fish it out. Then i'd look it over good to figure out why it broke off., which would probable lead me to opening the transmission. Have you drained the transmission? I'm going to speculate the rubber boot around the shifter was in poor condition or missing, so there's some water in the transmission. You could flush it with diesel a time or too. Then see how easy/hard it is to shift. If it's hard the shift rails probable have some rust on them and or the shift rail spring and balls are rusty. Even if you end up splitting it to get the piece out it sure is nice to flush some of that heavy gear oil off first.

Easy enough to open that transmission up and see what's going on.
