Spindle washers????

Recommended Posts

Curious? I recently acquired a 1980 era 42 inch RD mower 05-42mr01.... i recently disassembled - had sand blasted, then I painted, as well as did some mechanical work.  I checked diagrams online and they show the two different spindles - oriiginal and successor -- my curiosity is about the washers between the blades and the spindle? It appears many decks have a "thin" washer between the blade and the spindle and the heavier, thicker, washer is between the nut and blade. However, the online diagrams and what I found on this RD is two thicker washers - including the thicker washer between the blade and spindle? I understand the concept of the thicker washer between nut and blade to distribute the nut physics across the heavier washer -- but does it matter much if using a thin washer or thicker between the blade and spindle -- and WHY the difference in the original production spindle of using thicker washer both sides of blade ?  (See some before and after photos attached ) --- thanks

to keep the blade tips even I have had to switch washers around even add or subtract some.  After 40 years the deck shells can be deformed...

Have you looked at an original parts list?

Most deck manuals are shared by more than one size or style of deck.

When the online parts lists got posted they do not identify what deck uses what.

Perhaps different decks use the washers differently.

Looks like you have two different spindles, the ones with the big hex takes a thick washer and the small hex on the spindle take the thin. Must have to do with what Paul said keeping the tips in line dimensionally.

this is the Parts Tree diagram with two differnt spindles i referenced - appears the hex spindle has thicker washer both sides of blade but the successor spindle  ( non Hex) has the thin washer between the blade and spindle with thick washer between blade and nut
