lots of great info to pass along to my grandson -- many thanks

We are glad to help, Belgium is a diesel country so I had to get me a Diesel tractor. most of these small 1cyl diesel engines are made for generators. They can run for thousands and thousands of hours...

+ points:

  1. Low fuel use
  2. long maintenance intervals
  3. powerfull and very torquey
  4. can sit for years and fire on the first pull
  5. less fire hazard @Pullstart :D
  6. stronger internals, so a longer lifecycle.

- points:

  1. expensive to purchase
  2. loud
  3. some can be stinky
  4. taller due to the OHV design with decomp

+/- They are heavier then gas variants, but this could also help with front wheel traction

How is it powerwise? a 7hp diesel?

and an L48 being 4.8hp. does it still have sufficient power?

7hp is more than enough. The 5hp is plenty for a short frame

If these engines are to big, and don't have to work, they won't get warm.

Lombardini made 1cyl diesel engines up to 18hp

The manual calls for a 250hour oil interval!! that is 10 times less often then a Kohler.
