654 engine take chance on rebuild?

Recommended Posts

The Gman

Bought a 654 a few years ago, tranny is locked up but I got the engine to run. It smokes and has low compression. Figured would be a good project this winter. Rebuild both the engine and tranny.

This what I found. The bore is in spec. so a light hone and valve job with new rings should do the trick. Con rod is toast but I can get a new one on the bay. Problem is I can't get a crank shaft.....

Haven't mic'd up the journal yet but if it's good think I can get away with a good polish or am I wasting my time?

Thoughts???

The rest of the horse in fair shape

Can you post two or three pics of the crankshaft you have?

Since you are going to get a new connecting rod anyway, is the journal diameter original or has it been turned down already?? IF it is original AND the scored area is minimal, it may be able to be cut undersize. Time to consult a decent engine machine shop for that one ... if that is what you want to do.

Soak in muriatic acid, then polish. That crankshaft will clean right up. I have cleaned crankshafts that were... a lot worse than that...

You can use a fingernail file on it as well... after soaking...

Oh, and don't forget, when you soak it in muriatic acid, it must be neutralized with baking soda. Once all the aluminum is off of the crankshaft,

Soak in mixture of  ½ cup of baking soda to a quart of water. Pull the crankshaft out of this solution, coat in baking soda, then dip back into baking soda/water solution.

Completely dry the crankshaft, and oil it all over with engine oil or molly lube.

The journal, in my opinion, should go back to the same size as stock. Wouldn't hurt to check, but in my experience, it will be perfectly fine.

I can get the crank ground but can only find standard con rods.

I have a crankshaft that I couldn't use.

Lemme look at it when I get home.

Something to do with a step in the shaft my existing one didn't have.

By the way, I don't have the Techy engine anymore... and don't want/need the crankshaft... so if you want it, you won't be robbing anything from me... :P

Hey @The Gman... I did put the crank on the die grinder... to get it cleaned up...

I have it boxed up and ready to ship. Be aware, it is pretty greasy, nice and oily, so don't let it slip out of your hand when you take it out of the box... (latex gloves wouldn't be a bad idea)... :laughing-rolling:

Fantastic Don,

I'll cross-reference my engine to the parts list you sent.

Gotta say again. The best forum, the best people anywhere are right here on redsquare.

Woo hoo. :bow-blue::greetings-clappingyellow::eusa-clap:

Yes sir, I learned the same thing when I came to Redsquare. :banana-rock:

I have gleaned so much information... I really can't express my appreciation to guys here.

The only thing I can do is pass on helpful information (particularly about engines), and help when I can.  :D
