Wheel horse not sure what year

Recommended Posts

moe1965

I just brought this home but not sure what modle number it is. It has a 12 hp kohler serial number on it is 14132462.  If I did my research correctly it's a 1984 engine.  I'm guessing the same is true for the tractor.  The tag on the tractor is completely wiped out and no numbers are readable . I picked it up for 50.00 was told it ran 3 years ago then parked. My winter project If anyone has a guess what it is let me know.  Thanks.

Even if it has a blown motor, 50$ is a great deal. Get it running and it's a steal. :ychain:

I agree with @gwest_ca, it appears to be a 312-8, looks to have been repainted, I have never seen the black stipe like that before and the front of the hood red like that on one machine. I don’t need to tell you how much of a deal that is. Looks to be in good shape too, I would have sold it non running for at least $150. Good find.

Definitely repainted I can ser brush strokes all over it.  My guess a youngster was given this as a slow gocsrt and put the racing stripe down the center of the hood.   I'm definatly going to need to  replace all the trans seals any idea what seal part numbers I will need.   Thanks again in advance

I would check the transmissions and transaxles page or summon @stevasaurus to help.

@ebinmaine Already had to search pretty deep for it, I found it to be super useful, could save everybody from buying disasters and saving everybody money.

Many thanks for composing that topic.

When does a topic get pinned?

You're quite welcome.

There's a lot there but I'd rather ALL the information and sort out what I don't need at the moment.

Feel free to post a comment setting your own "search words" so you can find it later.

Perhaps @admin can send the whole thread somewhere....?

Or just the list?

I believe so as well, given Toro bought WH out in 1986.

I like it! And a $50 price tag? I have hope for the world after all!

Nice tractor. 312-8 is a great mid-range worker. It will last decades more with proper care.

The engine was made in 1984 but the first year for the 312-8 was the 1985 model year.

Look in these for your part numbers…

I got my seals from Lowell at Wheel Horse Parts and More.

Look in the Classifieds in this Forum, under vendors and you will find his site.

I just bought seals tor an 1984 transmission and I believe the seals were :

INPUT SHAFT SEAL

# 100442 / 1461

(need 1 , but I would get at least 2 because I boogered 1 up trying to install, to me it was the hardest 1 to do )

BRAKE SHAFT SEAL ( need 1 )

# 100441 /  1303

AXLE SEALS ( need 2 )

# 100863 / 1263 / 1232

If your boot is bad I would replace that too… should find one on Lowell’s site.

Drain the transmission and check for water. Lift the front end up as high as you can to get as much old oil and water past the hump in the casting in the trans as you can. If the trans oil is at a good level I would drive it a little if it’s running to warm it up before you drain it. I have been told on here to flush the transmission with diesel fuel a few times to help clean it by draining oil and water, fill with diesel, drive the tractor / in all gears and reverse around to warm trans, drain, refill repeat a few times, refill with 80-90 wt. gear oil.

Here are some pics of my transmission .

Last pic is seals and boot I got from Wheel Horse Parts and More.

@moe1965  I find it very useful to come to Red Square and ask for information before I do things to my Horses… it has saved me much grief I believe…
