1973 Raider 12 ignition switch

Recommended Posts

I need a new one of these, I'm in the UK. Have looked at the parts diagram and found 8362 as part number, obviously a WH number. I can't find an equivilant Toro number. I need it quickly as work to be done so can't get one from the USA plus with postage etc megga expensive.

I have the diagram put up by Gary showing "RMLBS" contacts. Have not taken the old one off to see numbers yet. Machine has electric start and contact points ignition.

I am quite able to work with a meter etc and do pretty much anything electrical/mechanical as one does with a nearly 50 year old machine!

I can get 103990 or 103991 on UK Ebay at reasonable price, these are Oregon parts. will one of these do the job please?

Thanks

Keith

A 103990 will work. 103991 is for mag ignition I think. One of these should work.

8362 is a 4 key position switch and  uses the RMLBS wire positions for magneto ignition.

The 101917 is a 4 key position switch used with battery ignition and original to your tractor.

The last wiring above includes a diagram to use the 3 key position 103990 for battery ignition.

There is a way to remove the wires from their holder so you can relocate them in the correct positions.

Battery, Ignition and Rectifier need to be moved.

Ok, thanks for the replies, I need a bit more help here please.

I have removed the switch from my WH, it has the name "Indar" on it. Looking at the underside where the tags are they are labelled (clockwise) as G,M,A,S and one with no stamp on it that I can see. Have dismanted the switch and "M" is connected on the inside to the center

I cannot find a switch on the net with these markings. Maybe its not original. All had wires going to them.

As the wires have been replaced at some point and three of them are red, one black and one green its obviously non standard and I will need to work with the meter to see what they connect to.

Just looking at the operating manual downloaded from this site  for Raider 12 it says the switch has three positions, "off,"  "Ignition and acessories on", and"start". Mine has four positions. "Off", "ignition and lights" (obviously if the light switch is "on"), "ignition only", and "start"

I always thought it a bit odd that to use the lights I had to turn the switch counter clockwise from the run position. Quite happy it the new switch has 3 or 4 positions and can wire it accordingly.

Sorry for the long post, do we still think a 103990 will do the job.

Thank you for your patience!

Keith

You should be able to make it work. At one time the 4th position did control the lights - no separate light switch.

More info on the switch. Click on the picture in the link to get to it.

The wiring diagram pdf in case you want to print it.

Thanks for that. I took the switch apart, no signs of burnout on the contacts, just 48 years of crud everywhere. So I cleaned it all up and then tried to reassemble it. After an hour I went on the internet and ordered a new one!

Have fixed many things but this one wasn't to be, but if you don't try..........

My new switch arrived. An Oregon 33-394  which is advertised as replacing WH 103991.

It has 3 positions, pins are;

B (goes to ammeter to soloneid to battery positive ?

R goes to rectifier center connection?

S switch feed to soloneid  ?

A feed to light switch ?

M not sure about this one. Think it would go to magneto looking at wiring diagram for a 1971 Raider, but mine has coil/points ignition ? And M is only connected when switch in off position- to G & R !!???? Help!!

G connect to ground ?

Key positions

Off G M R are connected

Run B A R are connected

Start B S R are connected

Obviously don't want to start experimenting and blow the rectifier etc:

Any ideas very greatfull received

Thank you

Keith

Sounds like you have the wrong switch for your application. Here is a little thread that Garry @gwest_ca and I did on the two most prevalent switches, the 103-990 and the 103-991. Hope this will clear things up a bit. As shown in the diagram Mike @squonk sent there will be a need to relocate a couple of wires in your 5 terminal plug, they are a Delphi Packard 56 connector and if you use a small screwdriver to depress the spring clip they can be removed and relocated, se the photo below.
