Jeff-C175 7,203 #1 Posted November 18, 2021 I'm going to investigate this further later today but I noticed that the brake drum on my C-125 is kinda rattly loose on it's shaft. Tried to tighten the bolt (and loosen too) but that shaft just spins. Is there a 'correct' method to use in order to lock that shaft so it doesn't spin so that I can investigate why the drum seems loose? 1 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
squonk 41,980 #2 Posted November 18, 2021 I believe the shaft has a flat. If the drum is loose it is most likely worn or cracked. You should be able to get the bolt out with an impact gun and slide it off 2 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

kpinnc 13,167 #4 Posted November 18, 2021 Should be the common drum found on most any WH tranny. They should have a double D flat as was already mentioned. Hopefully the drum is wallowed and the shaft is OK. If so, just find a donor drum. If the shaft is buggered up, that may be a bit harder to find. 1 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

stevasaurus 22,972 #12 Posted November 18, 2021 Actually, to be correct...the Sundstrand is the hydro part of the trans. The transaxle is usually Wheel Horse. If you look in some of the IPL's the Sundstrand has one part number, while the transaxle has it's own part number...much like the manual transmissions. The brake drums on my 60's horses use a "C" clip and the drum is keyed. I don't know if they are all keyed, I just assumed they are...it makes sense. As for replacing a bad shaft...in the Section V 8 speed and maybe even in a hydro, it is just the cluster gear shaft. Steel on steel, doesn't hold. I can't see any way to lock that in place, might have to use the impact but I prefer not to if possible. The 'strap wrench' type. I need to remove that mess of a brake band anyhow. I'm not working on that part yet, but getting there. Had to take out a bunch of stuff under the dash, the hydro lever, brake return to neutral lever, etc, to get to the broken spring clip for the brake safety switch. No way to get in there and drill out the rivets (or grind them off with the dremel) with all that stuff in the way. But it's a good excuse to take it all apart and clean all that stuff up. Particularly the hydro speed control, that was all rusted up and not working exactly right, which is the way I like things to be. Pointing to the drum in yellow, the blue circle is the nut, and you can see that someone has been 'on it' in the past. It's a little bit buggered up. This is from the front. Hoping for the best though... just loose... And from the back: And a wider view for reference of the location behind the left rear wheel. In this one I've circled where the missing pedal safety switch and the two pop rivet holes for the spring clip that actuates the switch are. Easy to get to from this side, but impossible from the other with all that stuff in the way.
