Tonyp 284 #1 Posted November 17, 2021 Before I head out to the local box store, what is the correct size of the front wheel snap ring that holds the wheel on ? The original broke when I took the wheel off and I used a 3/4 as a replacement, but appears to have some extra slop. I can easily grab a few different sizes, but I would like to know what the WH correct size is. thx in advance tp
c-series don 8,720 #2 Posted November 17, 2021 Perhaps take the one off of the other side and use it for a reference?
wallfish 17,011 #3 Posted November 17, 2021 Must've been a used old one or something else is up as the spindles are 3/4" so a 3/4 is the correct one. They're stamped so one side may be curved on the edges. Look close and the sharp corner should be out, curved to the tractor side
pfrederi 17,741 #4 Posted November 17, 2021 WH couldn't decide how to keep wheels on. They used Cotter pins, E-Clips. External snap rings and bolts. Snap rings are 3/4 inch...but there are regular and heavy duty different thicknesses.

Achto 27,601 #6 Posted November 17, 2021 It depends on how they size the ring. If a 3/4" snap ring has a 3/4" ID it will not hold in the groove. 3/4" shaft with a 1/16" deep groove would require a 5/8" ID snap ring. I've run into this size issue with my snap ring assortment kit.

ri702bill 8,328 #8 Posted November 17, 2021 Tony: Are you trying to use an E ring?? WH used a circular external snap ring - different groove diameter and depth ... Bill
pfrederi 17,741 #9 Posted November 17, 2021 Looking in a couple of parts listings WH calls the external snap ring 104822 "special heavy duty snap ring" I would imagine you need the Heavy one I showed above...probably not to be found in the small bins at the big box stores... Tonyp 284 #10 Posted November 17, 2021 (edited) THX..I ordered a 10 pack from Macmaster Car # 98585a115 - Found this on another RED SQUARE thread. 3/4 heavy duty - $15 with shipping, thats $1.50 each. Buying 1 or 2 from other locations is over $10. Thank you all tp Edited November 18, 2021 by Tonyp
Tonyp 284 #11 Posted November 18, 2021 (edited) A std 3/4" snap ring does do the job, but I suspect NOT LONG TERM. Too much slop in the groove. Thats what I am using right now, but as stated above I have heavy duty rings on order. from Macmaster Carr. I wish WH would have just drilled a hole and used a Cotter Pin ! OLD SCHOOL - A Finishing Nail would have done the job ! Thx all for the replies. best tp Edited November 18, 2021 by Tonyp
Rob R 966 #12 Posted November 18, 2021 If the groove is damaged Go to Home Depot get a couple 1/8 Titanium drill bits block the axle so it's dead straight drill and put a cotter pin in and shim to proper fit..... DDDD done. 2
