front mounted air-compressor

The unloader valve on my compressor opens some sort of bypass valve on the cylinders when the set pressure is reached.  It sounds like the cylinders are 'breathing' in and out while the unloaded valve is open.

On mine there are 2 valves at the top of each cylinder.  One is a check valve so that if the cylinder pressure is higher than the air reservoir it opens and allows the piston to push the air into the reservoir.  The second valve (unloader valve) is operated by the air pressure in the reservoir,  once the air pressure exceeds a set value it opens and air will be allowed to go back to the intake, (think of a stuck open intake valve in a car engine), so the compressor freewheeling.  Once the air pressure in the reservoir drops below a set pressure the unloader valve closes and the compressor starts compressing.  Pressure values are 120 and 90.

 

This also means that you need some kind of air reservoir, otherwise the unloader valve will be continuously opening and closing.

 

That's my understanding of how my compressor works anyways.

They come pre-set from 125psi to 175psi, the way it works is once the set psi is reached it has a blow by and it bypasses the air into the atmosphere. when the tank gets below that pressure the valve closes and puts the air back in the tank, so your compresser never stops running.

So one could conceivably run the compressor off the engine PTO until full, then kick out PTO unless more air is needed. 

The unloader valve would be the "safety switch" to prevent overfilling.

I got me a tank. 52 gallons extra sturdy. 

 

A bit to big for the task, No? 

 

@ 110 pounds for the tank and 55 pounds for the compressor  I am starting to worry about weight on that front-end.

I'm only 6'-1"+ at  262 lbs. Headed downward...

At 165 lbs you're right in the range of what my Mackissic chipper is.  

 

I'm not sure what a 2 stage snowblower weighs in at. 

 

IMHO, you're just fine.

No sir, when your tank reaches the set pressure the valve opens on it's own. You never have to disengage the pto or anything like that. You can also run a cable from the valve to the throttle and it will drop you power unit down to an idle, but there is no need for that on his set up.

You might consider a caster mount, similar to the front mount for a mowing deck.

I have been considering that. I have some casters laying around.

But I may be looking for a smaller tank. 52 gallons is way more then I will need. But we will see.

Mount the pump on the front.  Run a high temp hose from the pump to the back of the tractor.  Make a trailer for the tank and tow the tank.  Use a quick disconnect to connect two.

Option two, buy a very small tank and mount it to the back of the tractor.  I have seen people make air tanks out of old propane tanks. However, that could be dangerous.  It would be safer to buy a proper air tank.

Maybe a small update, I got a smaller and lighter tank, which I will most likely will install in the front. I have had little time lately. Will get back in this project in the start of February.

Just scrolled through this topic. Very interesting concept, i'm curious how the endproduct will perform.

I'll keep this in mind as one of many possible front attachments.

I've been thinking of woodchipper, leafblower, generator.. all pretty interesting. One can dreams, right? 😁

It's a lovely attachment.  

 

I do also have a generator though I have yet to get a bracket made up.

Searched the heck for one, brand was never brought to the EU. But have seen some possible Bolens contenders.

@ebinmaine Yeah I think the chance of finding 'factory' attachments overhere in Europe is pretty slim. The only tractors that i've seen being offered complete with attachments like a tiller, chipper, mower and bagging attachments are the Case/Ingersoll tractors. Very beautiful and complete but also quite pricey (~$2500 - $3500) 😭

I was thinking more in the line of what @Maxwell-8 is doing and adapt and combine components to make them fit the attach-a-matic, so more of a custom job.

I enjoy watching those type of builds just as much if not more.

The thought processes that go into creating implements or tractor modifications are very interesting.

With careful selection and some thought one can come up with a solution that may be more fit to the needs
