Snow Blower Advice for a 70s C-160 Automatic

Recommended Posts

TonyBer

Hello..plowed (and cut) last year with my 70s 8HP and really enjoying both the functionality and hobby.   Came across this 70s C-160 (16hp Kohler) and I'm buying it next week.  I think I'll keep both...not sure but living in Pittsburgh PA I'd like to purchase a snow blower and didn't feel confident with my 8hp and part of the reason buying the 16hp for snow blower attachment.  The soon to be new to me C-160 is an automatic and with hydraulic deck.  So...my question and keep in mind I'm still relatively new to all this;  looking for advice on what to look for in a snowblower attachment to pair up with the C-160 16HP?  If you have any for sale close to PGH let me know as I'll eventually place a wanted AD when I know more of what I want based on the feedback I get.  Stage 1, Stage 2, are the hydraulic lines used on some or all?  Thanks!!!!

Single stage tall shoot. The 2 stages are too darn heavy! Make sure if you find a blower you get the lift rod for it.

Wow, what a great looking C-160.       I agree with Mike, a single stage tall chute will work great on the 160.   And make sure you get the lift rod and flag and the angle control lever.

Not for a hydro lift tractor they ain't. (Unless the plan is to switch implements on the tractor) I love the 2 stage compared to running the single stage but also have the HP to run it at 20 hp. They work OK on lower hp too but it's all about performance for me.

A16hp will definitely perform well with a single stage as that's what the setup was before the 2 stage came into play.

To answer the question about hydraulics. The hydraulics on that tractor is for lifting/lowering implements only. None of the attachments will use the tractor's hydraulics to operate them. Attachments are driven by belt

Nice. @squonk

Is there a thread somewhere illustrating the design? A pic?

Fairly easy build, use the skid as your pattern for the slots in a piece of flat stock, drill a hole to weld in a piece of round shaft for your axle for whatever wheel your using, drill a hole for an R clip, and that's pretty much it.PXL_20201205_191913007_MP.jpg.21211edc7625c6736e6173cdbf574e3f.jpg

So I found this really close to my home and its none of the models listed.  Its is also a short chute.  Would this fit my C160 and could I change out the chute if I can find a long chute? It is a model 6 3211.  Looks pretty clean and complete.

I requested the model number from this seller but his ad says came off a C160 which is the same as my model.  Notice its the short chute which I assume doesn't throw as far....can I change that out with a long chute?  Does it just bolt up or is it more complicated than that?  Thanks again!

Not quite.    The main difference is the short chute has the cable drive and the long chute has the worm gear drive to rotate the chute.  You almost need a donor tall chute to get the parts.

I have had both and they both do a decent job.     The cable rotator can be a bit finiky to adjust.

Go grab it if it's a decent price. It'll fit your tractor. A short chute is a good introduction piece because they're usually less expensive and more plentiful. If blowing snow works for you and your tractor you can always upgrade later on and sell that one.

Ask if they have the lift assist spring that connects to that eye bolt on the flag. Not a big deal if they don't though, you can get a spring at any good hardware store. Get the weights too if you don't have any. Adding tire chains is a plus

Typically the edges of the auger will be bent from from rocks, stones, hitting things and such. Especially in the center where the snow exits the auger. You can use a big crescent wrench to straighten them out which is better than hammering on it.

This one above with short chute I found yesterday and it sold today.  Sounds like I need to be patient and just wait for a model number that is plug and play with preferably the tall chute.  These are hard to come by or so it seems.

Being the time of year it is they are in high demand and usually bring the best price.  Be patient, they are out there.

That is one sweet snow machine Tony.

To be correct, the side extension wings should be turned over.    That small leading edge will then cut into the snow and the larger angled plate will push the snow into the auger.
