Need Help: Steering Shaft Collar

Recommended Posts

Walleye Guy

My dad is rebuilding a 753 Wheel Horse that my grandfather bought new in 1963.  There is a plastic bushing/collar that fits into the top of the two-piece fuel tank in which the steering shaft passes through.  Ours appears worn so my dad would like to replace it but it isn't listed in the exploded parts diagram.  At least we couldn't find it and I looked a few times.  Does anyone have a P/N for that part?  If I'm correct about it not being listed, does anyone have another P/N from a different model that would be a good substitute?  Thanks in advance for any help.

I don't know of a part number for the bushing and doubt that anyone could obtain one for a nearly six decade old :wh: by the numbers. You might need to take a look in the plumbing section or hardware section of your local hardware/plumbing supply store for a plastic bushing that will work.

@Walleye Guy  that bushing is probably in your local h/w store small pull out drawer section , get it in bronze , and use a chassis grease on it. also a good opportunity to go after all related steering linkage , use an aerosol spray lube to make the rust un out , then chassis grease . take advantage of what works , verify its function , then refresh it , wiring or mechanical , eliminate , chafing or wear areas . just my own experience , good luck , pete

Yes, the local hardware store and McMaster Carr are both great ideas.  I can also have one made if it's an oddball size.  However, are we all in agreement that a part number isn't listed in the factory parts list/diagram?

Item 15 is an "Ass'y Fuel Tank"  That bushing must be part of the assembly.

Gregor, good catch...I didn't notice that on the parts diagram descriptions.

@Walleye Guy Wheel Horse Parts and More is a vendor on this site. (look in the Classifieds section under vendors) Lowell has a listing for a #1539 sterring bushing in the  sterring catagory on his website. It appears to be nylon. I found a listing with that part number in the illustrated parts list for a 1963 Wheel Horse Ranger model  33E & 33R. The fuel tank on that year Ranger looks very similar to the fuel tanks on a 753 and 854 Wheel Horse. I’ll bet that will work for your 753. -JD-

Ken, thanks for that info.  I'll have my dad verify those dimensions on the original bushing.

J854D, thanks for the tip on the #1539 bushing.  We'll look into that.
