grounding engine tins

referring  to a regular issue of  often corroded engine tin / cooling tins . try this out , battery ground rail , 4 ga  cable main line , add to battery ground bolt point. cable down to lower corner of engine to frame bolt , serrated washers and dielectric grease, cable up to rectifier , mounting point , then up to headlight mounting point , unscrew every " tin  " mounting bolt , reinstall with dialectic grease . this simple upgrade has eliminated my electrical problems . obviously if you have frayed or corroded connections , that s another upgrade . but this grounding enhancement , has made a problem go away , pete

I'm prone to grounding individual components. 

I run the main battery ground to engine block. Separate grounds to VR, all gauges, solenoid etc.

It always seemed odd to me to trust unpainted metal to make lasting electrical connections on outdoor equipment, especially across several components. Tail lights attached to a fender bolted to brackets bolted to the transmission bolted to the frame is a good example. Dielectric grease on a direct-wired ground connection is my favored route.

Unless it is a Kohler Magnum, with the regulator in the air shroud I can't see any reason the engine tins need to be grounded

A good clean block connection point and a good clean terminal with good cables lasts for years. We ain't flying the shuttle loaded with electronics here.

 

On my engine test stand I was having a generator issue. I checked my ground resistance and it was in the mega-ohm range. Just cleaning one rusty lug on the generator frame brought the entire circuit under 2 ohms.

@Jeff-C175 might have been attached to a previous search , , btw , those lugs are a very good alternative on a snow blower chute pull swivel area . the  original 2 screw set up on the cable , is minimal at best , drill out the rivet mount  and use a 1/4 bolt with washers and elastic lock nut , just another experimental trouble spot , that is long gone , pete

THAT my fellow members, is how Home Depot and Google track where you found the link to their product. Within that long string of letters are a bunch of &<label>=<text> segments. Each one can contain information about cookies that were found on your machine, what webpage you got the link from, what ISP you use for internet access, information about your computer, and more. Usually the "text" is encoded so you cannot easily see what they are taking from you.

Agree with above. You need a clean connection for the wire and dielectric grease will protect it indefinitely. Silicone grease is hard to get rid of....

One place that is often overlooked is the starter.

When one is disassembled the ends of the field housing, the commutator end plate and the drive end plates should be wire brushed to restore the ground path they provide.
