Did you check to axle pivot tab as they are usually broken.

I did not. Is that the L shaped bracket in front of where the tie rods connect to the steering shaft in the picture? Highlight yellow…

Now don’t you worry yourself there… :angry-tappingfoot:

I took the @peter lena approach for now and lathered them with copious amounts of grease… whilst you are gathering your curds for a long winter nap, it’s cold round my parts and I’ll wait and do em proper in the Spring. Some of us don’t have heated play rooms with padded walls for shops… :occasion-clown:

Yes, they’ll be Regal Red… :handgestures-thumbupright:

or maybe not… may just go “awe naturale” in keeping with the whole electric, save the planet, battery powered thing… them rattle cans gonna melt the North Pole ya know… :scared-eek:

Stay tuned…

When the bore for that 5-04 gets worn, the 5-05 bolt gets worked loose and can fall out.  If the 5-04 is a sloppy fit it should be repaired.  To prevent wear in the future, jack up the tractor by the frame so that the axle hangs free, and then pump grease in till it comes out clean.

Put her to bed for the winter… :sleeping-sleep:

space constraints lead to necessary decisions… Mrs. Sylvan’s car goes in the garage for the winter, and with two plow workers ready to go for winter duty, the choice was made for me… :teasing-signhere:

will be learning the dc world over the winter and will be ready to go in the spring… :coffee:

Hhmmm… maybe I should - you know,  being “green” powered and all, it does emit Unicorns and rainbows instead of Greenhouse gases…  🦄  🌈

What is the run time when using 3 batteries?

Any idea how big they are?

Put to bed for winter…

Ran for about 20 minutes around the neighborhood when I got it… will do full run tests in spring. Gonna use to tow train so not really concerned about long run times…

Old car batteries in it now… will be buying new deep cells in the spring… existing are pretty tired…

Actually, Costco has marine battery that’s not too bad… $89 - $99… we’ll see in the spring…

I used them on my outboard with a solar trickle / float. Excellent performance…

I will almost bet that those two plow tractors make you a very popular guy around your neighborhood.  This is the first winter for the new driveway, no?  The inside of your garage sort of reminds me of GranTorino.

Yes they do! Make quick work of snow…!

Yes first year for new drives for us and next door… so far so good… no cracks…

The garage is, shall we say, utilized to the full extent…

Started fixin up the E 141 with a bit of warm weather.

Ordered new shoes - Carlisle Turfsavers all around… :auto-layrubber:

Existing are holding air but pretty severe cracking… Don’t need a high speed blow out pulling the train…! :scared-eek:

Installed the battery chargers / floaters… :scared-shocked:

Went with three separate 12 volt chargers for two reasons. 1) Existing batteries are all different. Individual chargers insure good charge for each. 2) Cost. They are working well. I may not need to flip for batteries this year. We’ll see…

New shoes today… Carlisle Turf Savers - Made in USA…! :flags-waveusa:

Then noticed right rear hub was in about 1”… hhhmmm. Loose set screw. Hub came off by hand!!! Now I know why I don’t use lift assistance for my plow blade… After a winter of plowing with a manual lift I can take hubs off by hand!!! :banana-linedance:

Fixed and torqued…

Oh… the other one is soaking… :hide:

Are the tires still being made in the USA or are those old stock?

Did you replace the set screw(s)?

Don’t know if NOS… they seem very “fresh” but I don’t know. I do know Carlisle makes Tires in China, as I did a thread on the size difference between USA (bigger) and Chinese…

I did not replace set screw. I cleaned it up and torqued it back in place…

If that set screw has only been tightened up once or twice in the past and not overdone, you should be fine.

Might want to make a note somewhere to re-torque it after 30 or 60 minutes of use.

Irish eyes were smiling on me today… the second hub slid right off by hand with one night of PB soaking… :banana-linedance:

Never replaced an axle seal or brake shaft on a WH… done a few on motorcycles… tricks on removal and replacement?

Get you some crokus cloth and clean that shaft up real well.

De-burr the keyway groove.

I use a small sharp flat screwdriver to drive the seal around the shaft a bit then it just keeps circling and comes out.

Some find it easier to use a screw (into the metal of the seal) and pliers to pull the old seal. I've done both.

Clean the seat where the seal rests. Likely all gunky.

Now's the time to take a good look at the bearing.

To reinstall lotsa folks recommend taping the keyway groove to protect the seal from the sharp edges.

I don't. That's the reason I smooth it out with sand paper.

Oil the seal. Carefully slide it into place. It'll likely be a little tough to start on.

I usually use the hub as the driver for the seal.

Sets them right in nice and flush and straight.
