xstang77 2 #1 Posted October 30, 2021 Would someone be able to show a picture or offer insight how the steering wheel is retained on the shaft on an 88' 520h? I'm intending to put a 90's 314 steering wheel on which looks like it uses a simple straight through roll pin, however the 88 shaft instead of a through hole has grooves notched in instead. pacer 3,174 #3 Posted October 30, 2021 (edited) I'm not familiar with the 500 series, but the D's have a splined shaft. They can be a bit tough to get off -- you almost HAVE to have a 'clam shell' type puller. Edited October 30, 2021 by pacer
Ed Kennell 39,230 #4 Posted October 30, 2021 I never had the wheel off my '88 520H so I do not know if the shaft is splined. It does have the typical roll pin. The wheel hub is notched on both sides to install/remove the roll pin. The center hole you see is plastic hub, not the shaft.

That's plastic the shaft doesn't cone through on those steering wheels they ate pinned with a roll pin just like the other Wheel Horses.
xstang77 2 #6 Posted October 30, 2021 I'll post a pic of the shaft on the 520 this evening, the 314 seems to have a through hole, worst comes to worst I imagine I could just drill a straight hole through the 520 shaft. Thanks for all the insight for so far!

Thanks for all the insight for so far! Had two 500 steering shafts--regular and gear-reduced versions. Both identical to @Ed Kennell, roll pin only and smooth bore. Don't think you'll need to do any drilling, but having a roll pin punch and very solid lateral support on the steering shaft helps a lot (I notched a 2x4 bolted to a garage beam to fit snugly against the steering shaft).
ri702bill 8,564 #8 Posted October 31, 2021 (edited) Take Don's advise - backing up the steel portion of the shaft solid to the building is the way to go - been there, done that. Use a real roll pin punch, not a flat one. Secure it with a pair of locking pliers (aka Vise grips) and have at it with a 3 pound hammer. xstang77 2 #10 Posted October 31, 2021 No roll pin hole, just those vertical grooves, one on each side.
Ed Kennell 39,230 #11 Posted October 31, 2021 Looks like someone tryed to stake the wheel by drilling axial holes. Is that the remains of a sheared off roll pin to the left of the groove?
lynnmor 7,388 #13 Posted October 31, 2021 Someone trashed the steering shaft a long time ago.
xstang77 2 #14 Posted October 31, 2021 Looks like my only option is to re drill it then, thanks
Lee1977 6,874 #15 Posted October 31, 2021 They were trying to tighten It up the pot metal sleeve in those steering wheels tend to wallow out. Mine was so loose that it hit the top of the dash. The hole in the shaft is there may be filled with something. That gash in the column look like it was done with a side grinder.

The gear reduction shaft has a different angle on the gear it's also shorter. If you have the complete gear reduction set you can change it out. The 1988-H and 1989-H used a standard shaft like the early Wheel Horses. ( it may be longer because if the raised area on the 520 dash ) Edited October 31, 2021 by Lee1977
Lee1977 6,874 #18 Posted October 31, 2021 By complete gear reduction set I think you will need the lower steering shaft also.

Reduction and regular have the same tie rods and steering wheel but in my limited experience, I found that EVERYTHING in between was different! Pretty sure the shaft from any 300, 400, or non-reduction 500 will work for you. I believe I have a regular shaft and a wheel from a 400+ hour machine in the parts pile. PM me if interested.
