Custom Clevis Hitch?

Recommended Posts

Poppa Bear

Hello all and thank you for allowing me to join.  New Horse owner here - recently purchased a 417 - 8.  Looking to put it to work doing some gardening and lawn care.  Have been searching for a Clevis Hitch for my unit to attach a Brinly plough and/or culivator.  Seems they are as hard to find as hens teeth - up here in Ontario, Canada.  While browsing this site a few weeks back I saw a few photos of this hitch.  Wondering - where does a guy find one like this or the plans to build one?  Looks like a sweet hitch that would fit my needs.  If you have any other suggestions on what to use I am open to all suggestions.  If you can advise where I could find one - again - open to hearing from you.  Given I am in Canada - would much prefer to find one somewhere in Ontario as shipping costs to bring across the border I am sure would be prohibitive.  Many thanks for your assistance!

Cheers,

Poppa Bear

that looks like it might be two different pieces.  The normal clevis hitch is the welded part that is hooked to the tractor and lift cable.  The back to back piece looks like an option maybe?

If you have access to a welder (your own or a friends?), that hitch can be made with two sleeve hitch brackets welded back to back with one drilled out to handle the bolt on the ball, plus the sleeve pin.

The parts are sold by Wheel Horse Parts and More (which also sells other styles of rear hitches) for sure and possibly by K and B or even AtoZ. All in the Vendor section.

And WELCOME to Red Square--keep coming back.

Not sure if Poppa Bear wants the ball hitch part or the actual clevis hitch, he mentions wanting to mount a plow or cultivator? He also comments on prohibitive shipping etc, costs to Ontario. The dimensioned plans would allow him to fabricate / have fabricated the unit locally.

Good points all.

Fabrication does require some tools and skills, that's for sure, but can be quite successful. I was able to find a used one for my tractor via an in-person sale.

Shipping across the border has gotten better, recently, (and now people can cross as well!) so the cost may not be outrageous but the clevis sleeve hitch isn't light, either. If AtoZ has a used one, at least the starting price would be less.

I should have noted, as well, that the hitch needs the cable connecting it to the middle-of-the-tractor rock shaft so it can be raised and lowered.

Lowell is a vendor on this site. He’s great to work with…

The clevis hitch from Wheelhorse Parts and More is made from 1/2" steel, the stock Wheel Horse one is 3/8" thick. I have bent and twisted my stock clevis, It still works but I had to weld a couple of braces in it.

I think that’s my hitch. I actually was able to find a ball with the correct size bolt so I didn’t have to drill out the hole.  It works really well though. I just flip it over when I want to haul a cart that doesn’t have a ball hitch.

For those that want to use a trailer hitch ball on a clevis hitch, remember that the cable is holding up your trailer tongue so you don't want a heavy trailer attached.
