Ed729 57 #1 Posted October 28, 2021 Does anybody know if there are any options for front wheel weights for those of us with 6 inch wheels? I've not had much luck in my search, other than buy 8 inch wheel or add weight to the front of the tractor a different way.
stevasaurus 22,711 #2 Posted October 28, 2021 I would think adding weight to the front of your tractor is the way to go. 6" wheel weights are not going to weigh very much.
Pullstart 62,807 #3 Posted October 28, 2021 Fluid filling is a great option as well. @ri702bill made a cool set of front weights, possibly manufacturing your own is the way to go
gwest_ca-(File Mod) 11,033 #4 Posted October 28, 2021 There is not much info available on wheel weights so I went through price lists and 8" was the smallest I found. https://www.wheelhorseforum.com/search/?q="weight wheel"&quick=1&type=downloads_file Frame weights https://www.wheelhorseforum.com/search/?&q="weight frame"&type=downloads_file&search_and_or=or&sortby=relevancy
ri702bill 8,294 #5 Posted October 29, 2021 As Kevin (@Pullstart) mentioned above, I made 25 pound front weights for both the C81 and the 854 8 speed. The C81 front wheels have such a deep offset that there is actually enough room to add a 7-1/2 pound extra weight inside behind the 25 pounder, which I did for last winter. These are 25 Lb. cast iron barbell weights with threaded rod. The cast iron they use for weights has a very coarse grain and is a challenge to drill & tap - even with a brand new tap! A local guy buys and sells used gym equipment - last time I checked with him, he was getting a buck a pound for single weights. Also both sets of front wheels have tubes filled with winter grade windshield washer fluid - no Rimguard beet juice dealers within decent driving distance around here. Ed729 57 #6 Posted October 29, 2021 Thanks for the responses everybody. I like the idea of having wheel weights because they will always be out of the way of other implements. Having a quick connect weight bracket would be nice too if I can find or make one. ri702bill, can you provide more details or pictures of how you mounted those? Did you drill a couple holes in the wheels and mount a bracket in there?
cschannuth 3,816 #7 Posted October 29, 2021 I just built a homemade weight bracket so that suitcase weights can be installed or removed. I set it up so that I could still leave them in place even when I was using my snowplow and it works well and gives me a lot of flexibility.
Ed729 57 #8 Posted October 29, 2021 That weight bracket would be handy, might be nice to add a hitch to it as well. Does it work with a front mule drive?
ri702bill 8,294 #9 Posted October 30, 2021 Ed: There are 2 holes already in the front rims - IF you have genuine WH rims, not aftermarket. The hole size and spacing are different for the 854 and C81. Drilled thru a slightly oversize tap drill size to make the tapping easier - tapped about 3/4 of the hole depth so the threaded rod would bottom out then jam nutted them. No, I didn’t use that tractor for anything but snow plowing or pushing dirt or gravel. If you have a newer model tractor that has a mule drive you can build a weight bracket that mounts to your mule drive location. Or I’ve also seen people take old mule drives and modify them to accept weights. That makes it very easy to take it on and off quickly. There are lots of options out there. Does it work with a front mule drive Mine does. Just welded the bracket to an old busted mule drive. 100+ pounds with 4 weights. Just pay attention to how high you mount the weights. Mine allows the hood to open, but even 1/2 higher would restrict how much the hood can open. Also works on newer models. Ed729 57 #12 Posted November 4, 2021 Looks good! I think my hood might be missing a limiting strap or something. It hinges almost until the hood is touching the ground, so anything I put there is going to hit for me. Need to figure that one out I guess.
