Road toolbox contents?

Recommended Posts

ebinmaine

I want to put together a small travel tool kit from the assortment of extra tools I have between the two workshops. Something I would bring to all tractor related events and likely leave it semi-permanently behind the seat of the truck. I have a small toolbox that measures something like five or six wide by 20 long and I figured that would be the perfect little vessel.

Given the limited space of the dimensions above what would you put in it?

EB I use a heavy duty latch top tote. Holding all the necessary items like straps, tie downs, jack, tools etc. in the bed of the pickup. I do have a cover over the bed and a strap across to keep it up against the tailgate. I will on occasion need the bed space and have to take it out.

it was a left over from my side by side riding days.

You may need your bed open all the time and in that case won't work for you.

I had some old flat tool boxes, (under the seat style), but the newer trucks are not configured to accept them.

Eric:

I have something similar I keep in the garage. It is the pull out tray from an old Craftsman tool box. Here is what is in it...

One HF reversable tip screwdriver - 4 bits, large and small Phillips and large and small flat blade - self storing.

One each 3/8, 7/16, 1/2, and 9/16 inch combination box and open wrenches

One small adjustable wrench

One medium adjustable wrench

One spark plug socket - old style with the external hex on top - works with adjustable wrench

One needle nose pliers

One small cutting pliers

One small multimeter

One small tape measure

One small hammer

One set of fractional Allen Wrenches

That covers most fixes & repairs - I keep the 5/8 deep socket and 1/2" ratchet and the other sockets in the house.

Hope that helps.

Bill

I typically have one of these, or something similar with me as well.  Long road trips get the multimeter, deep well impact socket sets, battery powered impact, hammer, etc. as well.

My in car toolbox is pretty complete, and I use it quite often. People know I carry tools on the road and had to use it mutliple times to get people back on the road.

Oh yeah, what you do, don't forget to put a WH sticker on there!:thumbs2:

  • Fuses, wrenches, screwdrivers, compressor, jumpbox, ducktape, wire and pliers are the things I have used the most.

Oh, and I always trow in a trash bag. for when I have to do some work on my knees or back, to prevent me from getting dirty and or wet.

I forgot one item I keep in the truck - an old moving blanket that I have had for 40 plus years. Mulitfuctional - wrap up delicate or noisy items, load heavy items on it, pull them out easily, and as Maxwell stated - it can go on the ground if needed.

If you drive a F-150, a bottle jack is a must.     No one has ever been able to locate the factory screw jack.   Especially when you have a flat on a Montana prairie 10 mile from any road.

They were out in force the last couple of days. I can't find my camo ones. :(

We could use some of the sand from your yard for sandbags! https://www.fingerlakes1.com/2021/10/26/flood-emergency-in-geneva-clifton-springs-moravia-and-others-in-finger-lakes/

Truck Bag. This is the bag I used for 10 yrs. in the hospital. Removed all of my industrial tools like T handle allen wrenches and big pliers and replaced with car/tractor tools.

Handy Don

I refer to this as my "road load". It doesn't stay in the car so I have it as a checklist pinned to the wall in my shop so I can be sure the bag has what it should before heading out.
