Sharp08 43 #1 Posted October 27, 2021 I think I’ve decided on chains vs AG tires since I have a limestone driveway and want to plow snow this year. I was looking for opinions on the best 23x8.5-12 tires. I have a 1973 10 no name. It has undersized rear tires now as you can see from the pictures that it’s sits lower in the rear than the front.
daveoman1966 3,752 #2 Posted October 27, 2021 I had a '73 No-name 12hp Auto and like it alot. Keep in mind that if you put really wide tires on the back, the wide tire will tend to 'float' on the snow/ice surface and not 'dig in' nearly as well as a narrower width...say a 23x8.5x12. You might find that the 8.5 width tire will push snow much better than a wide-tread. Of course, fluid in tires and wheel weights help in any case. 1
8ntruck 7,021 #3 Posted October 27, 2021 Wide tires are generally not your friend in the snow.
Sharp08 43 #4 Posted October 27, 2021 (edited) Well yeah, that’s why I say 8.5. I guess I wasn’t clear. The current tires are short. Around 20x7-12 I think. I was asking more about tread pattern. Edited October 27, 2021 by Sharp08
Maxwell-8 4,277 #5 Posted October 27, 2021 the front tires seems to be higher then stock maybe part of the way it's sitting My raider has way less sidewall

I was asking more about tread pattern. I run 23x 10.5 x 12 in the snow with two link ice chains and don't have any problem. My tractor is very heavy. Fluid-filled tires and steel weights added and me. The more weight you can add for traction in the snow the better off you'll be.
Skipper 1,788 #7 Posted October 27, 2021 (edited) The thread pattern you have now is considered very good, and among the very most "grippy". Looks like the old firestone turf/garden, that is remanufactured today for pullers. Also consider now that you have that driveway. Don't get a thread pattern that picks up those ships and leaves them on the lawn perhaps? Edited October 27, 2021 by Skipper
JCM 9,192 #8 Posted October 27, 2021 to @Sharp08 I have had very good luck with stock turf tires 23 x 9.50 -12 , weights and chains. I have a gravel drive way with an incline from the road 200' long with no issues. Also a few wooded trails I like to keep open for recreation. Good luck with your decision. 1
Lee1977 6,673 #9 Posted October 27, 2021 (edited) For turf tires I like the Turf Masters they have a lot deeper tread then the Turf Savers. The other tires I would look at would be All Trails. You can find similar tread designs in several brands of tires, . Edited October 27, 2021 by Lee1977

Easy enough to wrap a chain around which can be a challenge on a v-bar tire and they would give you a fairly strong traction grip in dirt sand or mud. That's actually the next type of tire I was considering buying when I need a set.
roadapples 6,983 #11 Posted October 27, 2021 The tires you have will give you more room for chains. I would try it with weights and chains this winter.

Sparky-(Admin) 21,344 #13 Posted October 28, 2021 I’m a huge fan on the Carlisle All-Trails…installed these a few years ago and they have been great! I don’t use chains, but there is a 50# outside weight and a 25# inside weight on each rim. 5
kasey54 305 #14 Posted October 28, 2021 Sparky, what size are those tires? They look great.
kasey54 305 #15 Posted October 28, 2021 How heavy are the front weights? That must help a lot with the steering.

The next size down was 23x8x12. Yes, the front weights help with steering, can’t recall what they weigh.
