Ed Kennell 38,212 #1 Posted October 22, 2021 This morning I noticed the starter on the 312 was louder than normal. I rode to my deer stand and back at noon with no problem, but made a note to clean the bendix soon. When I mounted up for the evening 1/2 mile ride to the deer stand, no engagement...just a loud whirl. This is what I found. Anyone ever seen a break like this?
ebinmaine 67,596 #2 Posted October 22, 2021 In Latin I believe that to be starterus brokus. Can't say as I've witnessed such carnage. 1 1
Stepney 2,325 #3 Posted October 22, 2021 Blew the end of three starters off with a 16hp K341 in my Electro. It would snap back at total random for no rood reason. HARD. Yet it could be started with a long belt no problem at all. When I found that, I added a hand starter off a Wisconsin. Never had trouble at all.. use the starter motor? Same thing all over again. Fought it for a year. One day I replaced the key switch, and it never acted up again. As I later found, the contact from the ignition pin to the rotating part of the switch was wore out. And the switch would constantly arc when cranking. Causing it to randomly fire the plug apparently. Nothing to do with your situation I guess, but definitely seen the shaft fail in that spot. 1 1

RetroMower 349 #6 Posted October 27, 2021 Could manufacturing variance call for shims? I love GM and have a small block Chevy on my will as the sole beneficiary but I rarely take off a pre 90s starter that doesn't have shims.
