Snoopy11 5,714 #1 Posted October 18, 2021 Hey guys, SO... yesterday I was out doing work with HellHorse... moving trees... pulling out roots and stumps... etc. ANYWAY... so I am going down the path, and I notice that it feels weird... kinda bogging down a little... just doesn't feel right. So I get off, look underneath, and low and behold... a GIANT strand of barbed wire has made its way in between the transmission housing and hub. No damage to hub or the shaft... but it ripped out the main seal, and shaved a couple MM off the transmission housing. I was able to put a new oil seal in it... although it sticks out just a tiny bit more than it did originally. You guys got any thoughts on this? I ran it for a while after the event, seems to be running fine... no transmission leaks. The only noticeable thing is that the transmission housing right where the oil seal goes in is a bit shorter than it was. That wire shaved down the trans housing... @stevasaurus, @ebinmaine, @kpinnc... you guys thoughts on this? Don
Snoopy11 5,714 #2 Posted October 18, 2021 Oh... let me also add... uh... that piece of barbed wire was not mine... it was the neighbor's wire... (not saying it was done intentionally... but...)... Don
stevasaurus 22,739 #3 Posted October 18, 2021 Off the top, if it is not leaking, I would say just keep an eye on it. Bit of trivia...barbed wire was invented in DeKalb, Illinois...about 20 miles west of Elgin. 5

Yeah, between today and yesterday... been doing a lot of work... can't afford for the Horse to go down... I'll be showing you guys what I've been doing in the main forum soon... squonk 41,118 #7 Posted October 18, 2021 I got my foot caught on barbed wire whilst 3 wheeling 35 years ago. It's still not leaking.

Snoopy11 5,714 #11 Posted October 18, 2021 I will say though, guys... after a full day of working the horse hard... no leaking... no issues whatsoever... I think I might have caught it in time... One thing is for sure though... that CAN NEVER happen again on that right axle-hub. All barbed wire be stricken... 54 lashes on my part for not feeling something wrong immediately when it happened... I'll let you guess what I chose the number 54... @stevasaurus is rubbing off on me... Don

Most of my trannies have about 1/2 inch of space for the axle seal. You can almost put two seals in there.

Yes sir... it did. I would say that it ground out 1/4... It is not leaking... thank God... I think it is fine... just can't ever happen again. I don't know why it would happen again... as this seems like an utter anomaly but...

Question- do the hubs ride close to the case? Might be worth moving them out 1/4 inch or so.

Do you think it is possible to have them machine it out... if so... what has to be done with the bearing, as it is in the way of machining it out... right? Can it be pushed in a little? I took the transmission apart when I resto-modded it, but I did not remove/mess with any bearings, besides to clean them up... Don

Can it be pushed in a little? I haven't done it myself, but have read several times of folks driving the outer bearings in far enough to put a new set in from the outside. That doesn't prove they are supported if pushed further in, but someone here knows... If the bearings are still tightly supported when pushed farther in, then yes- a machinist should be able to cut the slot for a seal a little deeper. But that is a big if...

I mean, honestly, I have the tools to machine it out if I needed to... just not knowledgeable on the bearings. I have an "empty" 8 speed and a 4 speed case that was a solid rust ball inside, to the point the gears and bearings were shot. I cleaned the cases and kept them just for such issues.
