C160 8-speed.... won’t move

Recommended Posts

I was plowing the garden spot today when my C160 quit moving. Belt ok, and I can see it turning the drive pulley on the side of the transmission. What would you experts say has let go inside the transmission?

Check to see if one of the rear axles is spinning in one of the wheel hubs. A sheared Woodruff key in one axle is all it takes.

OK..... looking at the parts manual........ there is a reference to 5073 transmission and 5091 transmission. Is there a way to tell what I have before I take it apart?

Click on the fuzzy pictures to see where each transmission model was used

I hope this is another simple possibility, too!

When I purchased the tractor a few years back, I figured out that it is a 1974 model.... S/N is 66017, model 103809.... correct?

That is correct. The model number is just the 1-0380.

The 9 on the end is not used but it was their way of identifying the model year. 9 minus 5 = 4 = 1974.

Prior to this with a model number like 1-6041 they added 5 to the 4th digit to get the model year. 4 + 5 = 9 = 1969

Too simple to stamp the year on the ID tag, I guess?  That was some interesting stuff. Makes you wonder who came up with that cryptography........ and why???

Check the three drive keys as stated above.  Can you feel it engaging all the gears and the hi/low ?

Is the input pulley and shaft turning when it is in gear?      If not, the rolll pin on the cross shaft may have sheared.

Thank you, I will check.

Yesterday, the gears felt like they were engaging. I saw the input pulley turning, but I did not notice if it was spinning on the shaft.

I will dig the tractor out of the shed and look it over.

Yea!!!!!!!

Got to look at the tractor this morning..... your input helped!!!!

The left rear rim had slid in towards the transmission, exposing the key under the hub and allowing the rim to spin on the axle shaft.

I think I am well on the way to fixing this!

I will update later with the results.

Thank you..., got them! Left side I’d cleaned and back together... time to move it.....

(anyone know the measurements for the drive belt for 1974 C160? Mine isn’t unusable, but isn’t in the best shape)
