Recommended Posts

At first, I was thinking about something like this... which I have in the shop now... dunno what you guys think? :confusion-confused:

Hillman Natural Nylon Spacers, 3/4 in. Outer Dia. x 1/2 in. Inner Dia. x 3/8 in. Length, 880447 at Tractor Supply Co.

I did buy some longer 3/8 -24 bolts yesterday as well! So... I am prepared to do... something...

Don

Just remember whatever you put in there for extra length is going to add extra leverage.

What exactly are you talking about... like steal... nylon spacers...etc.? :confusion-scratchheadblue:

I suppose there's multiple materials that would work just fine but I would lean towards steel just because of the ruggedididity.

The others might be able to chime in. I want to call em machine bushings or something. Basically like a really thick fat washer that's all one solid piece of material.

No matter what you use for a bushing material you definitely should retorque the wheels often. Softer more flexible material seems to me would cause the lug nuts to loosen faster.

I'd change over to 5 hole hubs. Plenty of spacers available

Yeah, and just keeping in mind... I only need a little bit of room there for tire chains... nothing drastic. I don't need to go out 4 inches... just a little clearance between the box frame at the rear wheels...

And, I would say... I do not think it will be something that will stay on there all year...

I would... but that would mean

  • 1 I would need to buy rims...
  • 2 I would need to get my tires swapped to the new rims...

Just something I didn't really want to do...

I kinda wanted something that would work with my stock stuff... (not trying to be lazy or anything... but you know how it is...)...;)

I've had that thought too Mr Apples.

Is that something that can be done easily with these?

Having been around heavy trucks my entire 5 decades and been operating them for nearly two of those, I assure you that lug nuts DO come loose.

When I swap wheels and tires around on any of our tractors I go back and tighten the lug nuts again after an hour or two of usage. I almost always get at least one or two of the lug nuts to move a little.

With a three-hole hub like that I'd be wanting to check those a LOT.

I am beginning to think it would be a little easier if I swapped everything... LOL

Still, I am hard-headed... :angry-banghead:

Yeah that's what I had in mind.

Largest outside diameter you could use without interference and smallest possible inside diameter to prevent movement as much as you can.

180$ plus shipping for custom made spacers from U.S. Wheel Adapters.

This would use my stock lug bolts, and would provide me with new studs and lug nuts which I would bolt onto.

It's your money and it's your tractor so don't get me wrong here but I wouldn't even put thought to that. That's too rich for my blood.

What size are your rear tires?

I'd be willing to bet you can get a set of hubs, 5 lug rear wheels in the correct size from someplace like e-trailer, and the spacers and not even be that far off of that $200 figure... And you'd have a much stronger setup to boot.

'specially since I am only wanting this for snow chains...  a couple uses per year...

Do a Google search for Martin wheel.

You'll likely find some in the size you need with the correct 5x4 1/2 pattern.

What size is that axle shaft?

I'm not familiar with the setup on those 3 hole hubs.

If that has a regular keyway in the hub like any of the larger five lug cousins do then you could use a set of HD hubs from a 310-8.

Lighter Duty old style five star or starfish looking hubs you could use off of something like a B80 or a lot of other three or four-speed tractors.

So, I talked to them again. They told me that they had it wrong... if I get a 1 inch spacer out of billet... it would be 130$...

With the 1 inch spacer, I don't need new studs, whereas with a 2 inch spacer, I would need new studs to bolt the wheels onto.

What are your thoughts on that... EB?
