Found this one for sale today.  Only the second I've seen in my area in 11 years.  Seller is asking $285.

 

Thoughts on what it is?

It looks like a Raider 12 or a C 120 8 speed, the tag will tell for sure.

 

Price seems high. As for condition, I've saved worse.

Looks like an early "B" or "C" 1975 or earlier because it has the hood ornament. The asking price is just a starting point, to me a non-running  roller with an 8 speed that may or may not work well is a $ 100 machine. It appears that this machine has been sitting out in the weather for years so expect the worst and pray for the best.

You can't go by the hood ornament. MY 76 C-160 has the ornament and flip fender it isn't supposed to have. But the ammeter looks older, I'm going to say 74 C-120 8 spd. My 73 had the fancy head light lens.

 

That tractor isn't as bad as the Roach Coach I bought back in May and has more Patina than a truck load of old frying pans.

Are Wheel Horse prices rising like used cars? I could get $7K for my 2000 Ranger. It's just silly. Now, does a dash on a manual PTO machine call out direction for an electric clutch? That engine just looks too big for it...

Come on now guys, if that was a round hood y’all would be all over the patina that horse has!!!  Give it  some love to get it mechanically sound. Then a wet sand and clear coat and it will look like a rugged worker. 
 

Horses are semi scarce in central Texas as well, but there around. 
since it has a front mule drive I would ask if they have a mower deck for it. Since it looks like it’s been setting outside a long time check if the rubber boot over the transmission shifter is in place. If not the transmission has water in it. If the area around the top of the shifter is really oily the transmission is full of water to the point that the water is pushing the oil out the shifter hole.

My experience 100 dollar machines are few and far between. We all would love to buy them for 100. If you don't see many around your area then finding parts might be an issue as well.

I’d give it a chance…. At least a look.  There should be a transmission dipstick.  I’d verify how much oil is left, or if it’s pure rust water.  Spin the engine by hand and see if there’s any resistance (compression).  Go from there.

When I got my 74 c160 there was letters for the PTO on the dash but just a plug to fill the hole.

That engine is exactly how my c-160 and charger 12 appears.

Parts are never an issue when you've got the crew that's on Red square, a shipping system, and also places like a to z tractor.

I've had both a male plug into the top of the transmission and also a two or three inch piece of pipe with a cap on it. I can't remember which one that transmission had.

My Raider had the extra extension on the transmission.  Maybe it has to do with the limited slip transmission.

Yes the dash had markings for both PTO's. Electric was an option.

I've picked up far worse, and they can be brought back.

 

If the engine appears to have compression when you turn the flywheel by hand, and the oil in the tranny looks water-free, I'd make an offer at least. $285 is high, but I'm also in an area that they are few and far between. I understand that they will sometimes come with a higher asking price.

That's a nice touch.

 

Also, note that tie rod hanging loose.  And bolts missing from the engine mount.

 

 

It needs lots of work... like EVERYTHING!

 

I bet the wheels are all rusted out too.

Thay may be correct. That could be the side where the bolts go up from the bottom.

Diito. If the motor does run decent, you will have several hundred dollars in it, simply to make it presentable, If the motor doesn't run, it could be $,$$$$, even if you can do most of the motor work yourself.
