The C-141D Force Horse Build

That’s pretty interesting. I agree that a old opposed engine would look pretty wild. Maybe a smoke stack on each side of the hood? That’ll get some interesting looks at shows.

:woohoo:                    Looks like he did a first class job on the conversion. The KT will look sweet in there.

The gearbox is a neat idea.

Agreed.

I thought about doing that on one of mine but decided it was too pricey.

@Maxwell-8 Neat project!

Saw this thing huffing and puffing and shaking and shimmying at the Zagray Farm show. Yeah, its not a nice color but it took some gumption to marry this hit-and-miss to a tractor!

Have to raise the hood even more.

The one I'm using is nearly 4" taller than a 12 HP Kohler single.

@Handy Don That's an awesome rig!

One thing I'd double-check is the rating on the 90 degree gear-box. Would hate to over-power it and ka-boom the internals.

Also, out of curiosity, how does the clutching work? It looks to be a 6-speed. Does the white idler pully lower when the pedal is pressed? causing slack on the belt?

I have one of those 90 degree gear boxes for a 4wd conversion project, the issue could see is the max RPM speed running through the box, not the horsepower.

Good reminder there.

Fairly easy to get around if you have the room for a couple extra pulleys. Definitely a point of consideration.

Everything but the air cleaner will fit under a stock blackhood if you move the coil pack and get creative with exhaust....

Yep, and it's a 6/8 speed

It's a big box, shafts are ticker then those in a WH tranny. I run a 1-1 drive, so it will not reach more then 3600rpm.

The hood was made to fit a 20hp command V-twin with the fuelpump on the valve cover, It should fit such a big boxer engine too.

Answer to A:

There's also concern for Max RPM of a 90° gearbox.

Many are rated at 1800 so obviously 1/2 what we can turn an engine.

That can easily be accounted for by putting the correct size pulleys on the engine and gearbox.

Oh oh oh. Yep yep.

There's the issue. I have no black hoods so I'm measuring for a C series.

I know what those v-twins look like in a general manner of speaking but I've never seen one up close or measured one.

What size are the spacers on that tractor? They look about 2" or 50 to 60 mm....?

I'm beginning to wonder what odd sort of K582 I have because I couldn't get that anywhere near under there with 2" of lift.

I was comparing the top of the height of the spark plug on a single cylinder Kohler to the top of the height of the air cleaner on my K582 and the flat twin engine is around 3.5" taller.

Of course I realize they were never in a Horse and the one I have is a countersale type engine so it was not even meant to be built into a machine when it was new. No idea what the specs are.

I will have to mesure that, As you can see, he ran out of steeringwheel-shaft.

Is a K582 so high? wow

Here's the first post from the Colossus build. You'll see I did a side by side comparison of the K582 to a 12 HP single.

I don't think I had measured the height at that point but the width and length is clear.

It's a bigg'un!

I put the KT17 in the horse, looks good, and barely fits.

But I started thinking about putting this engine in my C175, since this would be the original engine, and I can run a pto on it. Which I can't use in this project.

Then I would put the M16 in here....

What do you guys think? Restore the C175 to as close to original as I can, or but the big boxer-engine in here?

FWIW, KT17 to the C175 is my vote. :)

The 16 mounted longitudinal here will still be unique!

Picture is worth 1000 words there, not as much room as I pictured. I appreciate different,  but...  imho, I'd put the twin on the 175,  put the m16 on this without the 90 gear box.

I'd vote the same. Keep the 175 so you can use it with the PTO if you need to.

So I decided to restore the C-175 a put the kt17 in it. I hoped it would stick out more on the c161.

So the M16 went in the C161, so I would be a more modern C161.

Still not sure if I am going to use the 90° gearbox

Did you find an RPM rating for a horsepower rating?

Nope, didn't say anything, and can find the model info on the internet, may have to search some futher.

Looks like it could handle a 16hp beast.

Likely. Given the shaft size I'm sure it will be able to handle the horsepower and torque of that engine perfectly fine.

The issue there is that the capability is going to be at a certain RPM.

There are many gearboxes that are rated at roughly half the RPM that your 16 will put out so you may need to cut the RPMs out of the engine and into the gearbox.
