Spray paint

Has anyone ever had paint mixed and put into a spray can? How did it work out?  $24 can.

@squonk could comment here I think.

I haven't done it myself in maybe 30 years?

That was actually using a product called a Preval sprayer.

Far as I know as long as the person who prepares the can does it correctly, you're good.

The only reason we don't do it is because, quite frankly, I'm too cheap.

For the price of the five or six or more cans it takes to spray a tractor you'd be a lot better off to just buy a small inexpensive airbrush gun and use a correct automotive paint with a correct hardener. IMHO, mind you.

I am having a Lawn Boy painted by a "real" painter. He is painting the major parts, but I plan to paint several of the smaller parts. I have tried to find spray paint to match the color, but so far nothing comes close to the original. I am trying to avoid turning my garage into a paint booth again. It makes a mess, and it takes me 2 days to clean it up.

I think I remember @rmaynard doing that a couple years ago.

After I rolled the Commando 8, and did some dent removal, I finished it with an Acrylic Urethane automotive paint using a Preval Sprayer. It did a good job for a small area.

I painted my truck with a FH purple gun. I can't say all of them are good best to try it out on something else first. I did some primer first as I could sand it out.

The gun did great the only problem I had was me, all the mistakes were mine.

My HO insurance company would have a FIT with that! (not to mention code officials!)

Truck looks great though!

Sorry, :text-offtopic:

I've never heard of this Preval sprayer before, so I did a little reading on it. If I understand it right, I can pour the same paint my painter is going to use into to the Preval sprayer, add a little hardener, and virtually spray the same thing he is spraying. The same as a rattle can. Is that right?

They like my money!  They did replace my roof last year it was 10,000 so I have got a little back.

I didn't use cheap paint. It was $140 a quart with the thinner and hardner. I bought two of those guns. The one I used I could not get appart with out destroying it. I just cleaned the plastic can the sprayed

lacquer thinner through it. I used it 6 or 8 different times. I had the bed and fenders off when I painted it.

A good Auto or truck body shop can do that, if equipped. There is a hardener that gets pierced and mixes with the paint. Then you have to use it within 8 hours or so. Have used them at work when the truck frame is painted something other than black

The Car-rep products claim they have technology that allows very long 'pot life' with their 2K products.

I have found that if I have an alkyd paint (like Rustoleum) mixed with a hardener and thinner, I can put it in the refrigerator for over a week and it is still sprayable.

Neither had I!  I think you are correct.

I am not sure about something though...  are the 'power units' a single use item?  They are pre-charged with the propellant and when they're done, they're done?  Those aren't rechargeable as I understand it, those are 'consumable' items?

The paint I use (Napa Crossfire Urethane) works well. Yes it's expensive. It has it's place. I like it if I say paint a whole tractor with my gun and need a tiny touch up or want to paint something small (seat back) I don't have to go thru all the riga ma role of thinning paint, and cleaning the gun.
