Ed Kennell 38,171 #183 Posted January 30, 2022 Dried venison white gravey on toast on Friday. Then an Instant Pot pressure cooked venison roast with a brown mushroom, onion gravey on Saturday. Randy, @rjg854 I found this Instant Pot cookbook at Ollies Bargain Barn for $3.99. Some cool recipes and some weird stuff. 2

Glad to see I'm not the only one that plows around the bird feeders! We have counted 28 at one time here. Due to the rampant building everywhere, only a few square miles of space exists for them my property being part of it. They actually look into the window as I sit on couch. At that point they are within two feet from me. They used to exasperate me with all the damage they do but I have adapted to it . It’s not really their fault . I have come to enjoy seeing them constantly. Even witnessed a few births. 3

PeeAaa game officials attempt to control the population through the issuing of additional doe permits , allowing baiting, and adding additional hunting seasons for problem areas. Unfortunately mother nature will eventually control the overpopulation thru diseases like CWD that is transfered among animals when they concentrate for limited feed. 1
lynnmor 7,306 #186 Posted January 30, 2022 I never saw so many road kills near my house as I did this past week. There was one or more in each of four directions in the first mile. I thought that the deer activity went down at this time of the year, but then the cellphone activity may be way up.

The same down here on 74 Lynn. This year was a strange rut season. I never saw any breeding activity from the the bucks I observed during the normal rut period. I wonder if many of the doe are not on the move and still breeding.

That's what I thought but couldn't believe they were that late. Maybe this cold and snow will get get them back on schedule.
formariz 11,987 #189 Posted January 31, 2022 A bit of a sad story here. There was a couple of years back a majestic looking buck with an incredible rack. He was always alone and we saw it quite often . Everyone knew about it and spoke of it often. Then township decided to have a controlled hunt which they now have every year. Then one day I am outside and I see this poor creature. Someone shot him with an arrow that was dangling from his side. His abdomen was ripped open somewhat with some of his insides coming out. He was just struggling to walk. I called cops , they came and shot him. One cop goes to car brings a hacksaw and cuts his antlers . They leave and tell me that they will send someone else to take it. Took almost a week for someone to show up. By then other animals had already gotten to it and made a real mess of the poor animal. Needless to say I gave everyone involved a real tongue lashing. I don’t know what kind of people they have in these hunts or how it is controlled and enforced but what I saw and the cops attitudes was nothing to be proud of. 1
WHX?? 48,815 #190 Posted January 31, 2022 I always thought that with what Cas commented about about loseing habitat and "yarding" up, which is common for white tails at this time of year, would contribute to more road kills. Not really sure on my busy stretch of road. Yeah I hear ya Cas. Never had the law cut the horns off and left the rest to rot tho. Here the counties have guys to summit bids to come pick up road kill every year. Cops or wardens have no business doing what you said. I get a road kill I'll go get it with the FEL and put it in a place where mother nature takes care. Bonus maybe get to watch a bald eagle or two.
Ed Kennell 38,171 #191 Posted January 31, 2022 Cas, that is a sad unfortunate incident that I am sorry you had to wittness. I confess I have made a few poor shots on animals that I was not able to recover, but I have also tracked and found many for myself and some for others that were never expected to be found. I am afraid many rifle hunters that engage in archery do not understand the difference between a 150 grain bullet that is traveling 3,000 ft/sec and a 500 grain arrow that is traveling at 300 ft/sec. and how the arrow is greatly affected by gravity, wind, distance to the target, and unseen obstructions. The arrows flight path is an arc well above the straight line of sight of the shooter. IMO, no shot should be taken at a moving animal. The animals posture must also be taken into account as unlike the bullet, an arrow speed is less than the 1,000 ft/sec. speed of sound, therefore the animal will hear the release and react before impact. If the animals legs are rigid, it will probable drop down several inches to be able to move. If the legs are bent, it will probably rise a bit. Accidents happen, but there is no excuse for the actions of the officiers that you described. Although it is illegal here in PeeAaa, In tha past I have also moved many roadkills to areas where the eagles, vultures, hawks, fox, and coyotes can safely feed.

Ed Kennell 38,171 #193 Posted February 17, 2022 The mount was dry enough to pull out all the pins and remove the ear supports. I still have a few cracks to fill with bees wax around the eyes and nose, but I'll let it dry a little longer first. 1
Ed Kennell 38,171 #194 Posted February 18, 2022 (edited) The pressure pot works great espically for the tougher cuts, but The low and slow worked great with a chunk of backstrap today. A 8" strip, 4 spuds, 2 onions, and a bag of carrots. Three hours at 325 in the oven and it was fork tender. Edited February 18, 2022 by Ed Kennell
Ed Kennell 38,171 #195 Posted February 28, 2022 My 2 1/2 year old grand nephew (Moose) loves marshmellows and his parents use them as rewards for good behavior. His 1 yo brother (Buck) has not aquired a taste for the sweet treats..yet. He lives in an urban area where there are several tame deer that feed on their shrubs. This AM I got a text frome my nephew...... . Moose wants to feed the deer, what do they like? I replied with this picture........ BTW, I did include a serious warning about the dangers involved when feeding wild animals. I

WHX?? 48,815 #199 Posted February 28, 2022 Lol I knew right away that was a fake pic! Not out of line tho I got within 10 yards of Mabel the other night with corn in a outstretched hand. I have my herd so trained all I have to do is rattle the corn bucket and they come in. Probably shouldn't be doing that to wild deer..... I just enjoy studying them tho! When green up comes they won't come in anymore.
