Well, unless you fix the engine you have... or put an identical engine back on it... you are going to do a few things to get it to work... for sure... ;)

If the engine you have is running okay right now other than having a leaking head gasket I think you'll find that when you take it apart, flatten the head on some sandpaper and put it back together you may very well be in great shape.

It'll all come back to you once you start messing around with it again.

On the Plus side, you went to school 30 years ago and these engines were the technology that you were learning on.

Keep asking questions. That's what we're all here for.

Chances are nearly 100% that if you have an issue one of us has run into it in the past.

Yeah, I mean, you can make anything work, if you have the time... there really isn't a brick wall that you can't overcome...

Maybe a little... :angry-banghead:... but nothing that you can't overcome...

I did a predator 301 swap into my Raider 10 but never had any intention on using the PTO or any PTO attachments. Strictly to pull a cart or rear implements. It was fun to try something different and make it work.

The HH 100 that was on my Raider kept blowing head gaskets according the the prior owner but the bad ignition module is what did it in for me.

LIke I already said, it's hard to install a working PTO, also the crankshaft is a diffrent diameter. And are those cranks Ball Bearing supported that can handle side pressure as the PTO would make when engaged.

I know this is a mistake- but I'm gonna open this can of worm dookey anyway...

Almost no horizontal engine currently manufactured uses ball bearings on the PTO shaft anymore- and some that were used by WH never did. None of the twin cylinders (Onan, Kohler, Briggs) did, and the Kohler Command singles didn't either. To my knowledge only the older single cylinders used ball bearings, and they were splash lube too.

I'm not a mechanical engineer, but unless the application you use one of theses engines on is supported shaft drive, side load is part of the job. Every commercial mower made in the past 20 years has no bearings, and as much or more side load than any wheel horse ever dreamed of. Those engines regularly exceed 3,000 hours lifespan. What none have are the axial load that the manual Wheel Horse PTO has.

Because I'm old and set in my ways, I prefer the Vanguard v twins because the horizontal 14-23hp versions have a true ball bearing on the PTO side, and full pressure lube to boot. The vertical Vanguards, and anything above 23hp do not have bearings.

Also- beware of manufacturers claims of "bearing supported crankshaft". This no longer means ball bearing. It often times means bronze or similar insert. Download the parts manuals and see for yourself. Do they last? Yes, and thousands of engines that use them last thousands of hours. I just don't like them. Again, just my opinion.

I said all that to say exactly what has already been said- if you're looking for an easy engine swap, go with a Kohler K or Magnum that was already on a Wheel Horse. Dual ball bearings, and bulletproof.

Interesting way to describe useful information...

BUT... Carroll Stream and Duromax engines have ball bearings... one on PTO side, one one flywheel side.

What say you?

In my book, that is reason enough to warrant buying one. But that's just my opinion.

Definitely understandable but those are an easy fix now thanks to Ed stoller

Well, I affirm that they do have full ball bearing supported cranks.

Here is a picture of when I put my Billet rod in my Duromax... you can see the ball bearing all the way to the right (it stayed on the crankshaft when I removed the side cover... perfectly normal).

And again, I should add, there is another on the flywheel side...

I would definitely consider on of those if I had to buy a new engine. In my tiny mind at least, they look like an improved version of a Honda- and those are pretty darn great.
