Just curious I have a raider 10 that has a 10 horse tecumseh on it what other engine can go on this without making modifications

What is it about the 10 horse that doesn't work? Are you looking for more torque? Or is that one not running?

Nothing yet I have to fix a head gasket but if it's worse I was just wondering because some tecumseh motors are harder to get parts

Gotcha.

You should find that one fairly easy.

If you do need to do a swap there are several different Kohler engines that would fit the bill. Depending on what you use you may have to change the wiring around a little bit but it's not that big of a deal.

Any Kohler that has been removed from a Wheel Horse will fit right in.

Driver here too. I'm daily now but I was New England regional for 6 years. I understand your predicament to All too Well.

The patina on the M12 makes it look like an original engine to your Raider.

indeed the engine is at least 15 years younger but looks the same age as the Raider 10.

I love the patina on this set-up

I don't really know why guys aren't mentioning this... I will go there...

There are a variety of engines that will fit... just depends on your skill level. Carroll Stream has an 11HP engine with electric start. Should fit right in if that is the power level you want. They also have 13.

If you go with 11 hp... it should fit right in. However, the bigger engine you buy is the determinant of how hard the install will be.

Predator 390 would be another option. However, for the best outcome, I would go with Carroll Stream.

Carroll Stream

I only did just a quick search but it looks like it's over $500 to get a hold of one of those.

For that amount of money I would get an old Kohler engine rebuilt and maintain the look and reliability of the tractor without having the modern look of the engine.

Nothing against anyone or anything. I just like the older, metal, engines in these tractors.

I even change the plastic gas tanks in our B&C series tractors over to the older style metal gas tanks.

PTO can't be done on those

@jtrosp1980I think finding a cast-iron block kohler is your best way to go

I agree there... I didn't realize how much these had gone up in cost...

These engines were not as expensive pre-pandemic...

I bought one for like 350$...

Be careful with something other than what Wheel Horse used originally if you intend to use a side pulling PTO.

Horse spec engines have particular side bearing setups and a lot of other engines can't be used.

I am not really sure what you mean, EB... can you explain in more detail? You talking about ball bearing supported cranks...?

Sorry, you lost me...

LIke I already said, it's hard to install a working PTO, also the crankshaft is a diffrent diameter. And are those cranks Ball Bearing supported that can handle side pressure as the PTO would make when engaged.

They do make adapters for the crankshaft diameter. And yes, those engines all have ball bearing supported cranks.

My Duromax, Tillotson, Massimo, Troy, Carroll Stream, Predator, etc... engines all have ball bearing supported cranks.

@chipwitch did a build with the Carroll Stream... successfully... although he went REALLY big with the motor... so he had issues with the hood fitment... which... as far as I know... he has resolved or is working on.

Many engines cannot handle the side load stress.

The PTO on many Wheelhorse tractors creates a very strong SIDE load when engaged.

Wheelhorse spec engines have a way to account for that.

Special bearings?

Flanges?

I'm not sure HOW it's done.

Perhaps someone like @953 nut can help there.

And can they handle the sideload? I have heard that not all of them can. Don't know if it's true

but converting to a electric clutch could avoid these problems.

Those that I know who have done this have had very good success. I think the only real worry would be the strength of the block... more importantly the side cover. It isn't the ball bearings that would even be in the equation... as far as durability.

You want some sideload--eh? Try on a 30 series torque converter... pin it to full speed with a fat behind on it... :laughing-rofl:

I sincerely feel like these engines are pretty durable... for what I have used them on, what other guys have used them on as well.
