1054 Bevel Gears

Recommended Posts

Wade Marshall

Hello All:  I've been searching forums for many hours over the last 2 years and I'm hoping someone can confirm my findings. I have a 1054 serial 48996, I believe it's a 1964 with the 5047 gear box. Due to speed shifting while moving snow, there are teeth broken off one of the the bevel gears in the differential. I've learned the gears are not available, therefore this gearbox is junk and my only option is to find another transmission. It's been in the family since new and it will be heartbreaking to see it go for junk.

Is it true that the 1965 (5051) trans will fit, if I can find one ?

Is it possible the 953 transmissions will be a replacement option ? Or other model gearboxes that will work ?

Has anyone welded these solid for permanent posi function, knowing what it will be like to drive as a posi ?

Thanks for your time.

Wade

The 5051 from the 1054A or the 5047 from a 953 will work just fine.. The 5051 has a better cluster gear set-up that became standard on all :wh: a few years later. You may be able to find a complete differential in our free classifieds section, give it a try.  https://www.wheelhorseforum.com/classifieds/wanted/?do=form&d=2

I installed an 8 speed on a 953 a few years back but used the differential from the 953. The axles on the 953/1054/1045A are retained in the differential with roll pins and the later gear boxes used snap rings. If you have a good machine shop that could cut the snap ring groves into the hardened steel ends of your axles they could be transplanted into any 1 1/8" transaxle.

I have Richard’s 953 with the 8 speed now… it’s still kickin’!  I also have a 953/1054 or two that will be getting 6 or 8 speeds, so the differentials might be available.
