Horse Newbie 7,069 #1076 Posted April 3, 2022 Got a question… just to see, while I was giving the Work Horse a shakedown, I engaged the PTO, and it jumped out of engagement… To make it stay completely “thrown”, or engaged, do I move this trunnion farther toward the end of the rod, or farther toward the PTO handle ?
Horse Newbie 7,069 #1077 Posted April 3, 2022 Got a question… do any of youse guys know how many amps the Work Horse (twin Briggs/ 16 hp) should be charging at ? It does look like the needle moves to almost half way to “5”. I have heard it should charge at about “3”… which if that’s the case, then halfway to “5” looks about right… Thoughts anyone ?…

Tighten it up by moving the trunnion towards the lever. Don't tighten it more than necessary. Charging rate seems about right. As the battery reaches full charge the needle will move towards zero. That should only be a 3 amp charging system. 1

Well that sounds about right- barely moving towards “5”, as I had the battery on a Battery Tender prior to the shakedown run… thanks.
Horse Newbie 7,069 #1082 Posted April 3, 2022 (edited) Took the Work Horse back out for another shakedown after adjusting the PTO … one turn of the trunnion back towards the PTO handle and the PTO stays engaged… thanks again @Bill D Also moved the PTO brake (which many of you say is unnecessary, and don’t use) out as far as it would go. That gave me what looks like a 1/16th of a gap between the PTO friction surface and the PTO clutch friction pad. I tried adjusting the brake according to spec but a few thousandths was not working. Horse Newbie 7,069 #1083 Posted April 3, 2022 Painted the outside of the Work Horse hood… when that dries for a few 2-3 days I will do the Rustoleum Satin Black grille… 2
Lee1977 6,659 #1084 Posted April 3, 2022 Might take more then a few days before tapping it up to paint black. Don't want the gray coming off with the tape. 1
SylvanLakeWH 25,557 #1085 Posted April 3, 2022 (edited) curious… why paint the grill gray then black? Looking great!!! Edited April 3, 2022 by SylvanLakeWH
Horse Newbie 7,069 #1086 Posted April 3, 2022 (edited) @SylvanLakeWH… that’s a very good question… I reckon I did not want to mask it off to keep the grey off the black area to be painted … so I got happy with the grey… “ Ours is not to reason why, ours is but to do or die”… I probably quoted that wrong… I just don’t why I did it… Edited April 3, 2022 by Horse Newbie

SylvanLakeWH 25,557 #1092 Posted April 3, 2022 As a Black Hood aficionado, I can assure you there is a trick to taping / masking once... Pick your color, but first color just let it overspray onto other area (within reason) - no tape. Then tape and apply second color with minimal worry about new paint underneath the overspray... And I have had no problem with paint pulling up just using regular old blue painters tape...

SylvanLakeWH 25,557 #1094 Posted April 3, 2022 Last time I did it I waited a couple days in dry summer temps - mid 70s - 80s… I only apply pressure to tape at edge by new paint… the rest I just let it float… less sticky tape to mess up the paint… But please note I am not a paint guy… nothing like the quality you and some others on this site crank out… my painting is for rust containment and admiration from a long distance…

kpinnc 12,028 #1098 Posted April 4, 2022 I'm no painter either, but I'll share my experience... 2nd coats: either within 60 mins or no less than 24 hours later. If sanding between, absolutely no less than 24 hours later. I'd wait at minimun a couple days before taping the hood. It's not just the tape pulling paint to keep in mind, it's all the touching the paint that will be an issue. Blue painter's tape is fine. Green frog tape is better. Stuff paper towels into the headlight holes to keep overspray out from under the hood. Wrap everything top and bottom in newspaper or paper towels to keep out overspray as well. And I've always been told that darker colors go on after lighter ones. Otherwise it takes multiple coats to cover the black. You did it right, trust me!

Sounds like that 'Majic' garbage at TSC. That is the worst paint I have used. It literally was still tacky two weeks after spraying. After TSC stopped carrying Valspar, I expected the replacement to be decent at least. Oh well, my bad... 1
